The Mount Trio vineyard is a family venture established in 1989 by winemaker Gavin Berry and his wife Gill Graham. Gavin’s long-held love for the land and agriculture, developed as a child growing up on a northern NSW wheat farm, was the driving force behind the venture, and today Mount Trio represents a very personal expression of the Berry family’s life. Named after the peaks of the stunning Stirling Ranges, the vineyard is a winemaker’s dream site, with 100 acres of north facing slopes, cooling breezes and gravelly loam soils. It was discovered by Gavin and Gill after rigorously scouring WA’s vineyard regions for the perfect location in which to pursue their passion for farming and grape growing. The warm dry summers and cool wet winters provide ideal conditions for viticulture and allow Gavin to keep a natural balance in the vineyard – natural balanced vine growth with no chemical intervention. The soils are low in fertility resulting in low yielding vines (less than 3T/acre) with small berried fruit of great flavour and colour. Today, there are 20 acres of vines planted on the property, which are hand tended exclusively by Gavin, Gill and their two children, Oliver and Bridget. Gavin has been making wine in the Great Southern region for over 18 years and as chief winemaker at Plantagenet and today, at West Cape Howe, he has made a major contribution to the quality reputation of the area. The first Mount Trio wines were released in 1995, and the range now includes chardonnay, riesling, sauvignon blanc, semillon sauvignon blanc, shiraz viognier, pinot noir and cabernet merlot.
