Mount Nelson Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough Ram's Hill 2007

Winemaker's Notes:

Tasting Notes: Good/Very Good. Restrained and calm, more refined and relaxed than many and therefore perhaps better with food. Nice combination of bell peppers and grapefruit. This wine is from Lodovico Antinori, who created Ornellaia, an Italian Super Tuscan.

Fine citrus and grapefruit combined but not sourly. This is an absolut good wine for hot summer days.

The Antinori family (Ornellaia, Sassicaia, Tignanello, etc.) goes to New Zealand! Super Tuscan Marlborough? Hardly - the investment in Mount Nelson winery is 31 acres of all Sauvignon Blanc. Brilliant purity of color - silver gold in the glass with passion fruit and fresh herbal aromas. Silky, ripe texture with solid mineral mid-palate and a lifting, slightly grassy finish. Future plans include a reserve from older vines.

A joint venture of brothers Piero and Lodovico Antinori, this is the first vintage to reach U.S. shores, and it is a promising first step. Melon and peach notes on the nose are garnished with fresh herbs, and on the palate the wine hews a line between round and ripe and lean and grapefruity, striking a fine balance.

Bright and tart, with pear and lime flavors at the core, adding mint and herb to mingle through the jazzy finish. Drink now.

A fabulous value, the 2004 Sauvignon Blanc explodes from the glass with exquisitely ripe gooseberries. Expansive and boldly-flavored, this medium-bodied, silky-textured effort is resplendent in layers of pink grapefruit, gooseberries, and spices. It has terrific mouth-feel and a long fruit-filled finish. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.

Lean and focused, with vibrant lime, crushed stone and quince flavors. Grapefruit, grass and lemon blossom highlight the tart finish. Drink now.
