External Reviews for Mount Eden Vineyards Estate Bottled Chardonnay
Dark yellow-gold, with rich, concentrated honey and fig aromas, picking up earth, herb and citrus scents, supported by lively acidity. Turns opulent and complex on a long, buttery finish. Drink now through 2007.
This is a big, vital Chardonnay brimming with fresh acids and oak, whose underlying pineapple, pear and lemon-lime flavors are delicious. Despite the richness, it's dry and crisp in acidity, with a minerally tang. Drink now.
Bright gold. Lively, mineral-laced aromas of pear, quince and white flowers, with subtle vanilla and spice notes in the background. Sappy and light on its feet, with surprisingly dense orchard fruit flavors and an exotic hint of papaya. The mineral quality comes back on a pure, nervy and tightly focused finish, which is impressively persistent. Balanced for aging but this will probably be in top drinking form in another four or five years.
A terrific example of a great California Chardonnay, the 2000 Chardonnay Estate emerges from a high altitude mountain vineyard. It exhibits notes of honeysuckle and buttered tropical fruits (particularly pineapples and passion fruit) interwoven with a striking minerality, good acidity, tremendous intensity, and impressive richness, The wine's acidity and structure have more in common with a top Burgundy Grand cru than most California Chardonnays. This is a brilliantly executed, full-throttle effort that builds incrementally in the mouth. It should drink well for a decade (one of California's longest lived Chardonnays).
Simply delicious, a rich, buttery style, with ripe, vivid and delicate peach, pear and honeydew melon fruit that's complex, concentrated and full-bodied, offering excellent length and depth. Creamy oak adds a touch of smoke and vanilla. The texture is silky. Drink now through 2016.
Notes of white currants, lemon butter, poached pear, as well as touches of honey and crushed rock are all present in the complex aromatics of the light greenish/gold-colored 2007 Chardonnay Estate. A beautiful, full-bodied, textured mouthfeel with great freshness and brilliant purity is evidence of another stunner from this iconic source of high-elevation California Chardonnay. This is probably my favorite vintage over the last decade and has at least 10 years of aging potential.
Notes at release: Believe it or not, this vintage is at last calming down and getting interesting. A full two years after bottling--typical, puzzling and amazing. Fermented on wild yeast in new and one-year old Burgundy barrels, this chardonnay is aged entirely on these yeast sediments for ten months in our mountain cave with no movement whatsoever. It was bottled in July with a light filtration for clarity. This is a subtle wine with hints of toasty lees, lanolin, lime zest in the nose and high natural acidity with lively herb, citrus, mineral flavors on the palate. Burgundian in style, it is somewhat contrasting with 2004 and 2005 which are more flamboyant. As expected, the finish is rich, long and mysterious. Given the slow evolving nature of the 2006, expect further improvement for the next four to five years and a drinking plateau for at least another ten.
