Dominus Estate is owned by Christian Moueix from Libourne, France. His goal, supported by the team at the winery, is to produce great wine representing the unique terroir of the Napanook vineyard. Our philosophy is very traditional—that is, in order to produce great wine we need the best possible grapes. Therefore, we concentrate our efforts in the vineyard. The vines are meticulously manicured—we believe in crop-thinning, "nettoyage," washing the grapes, and other labor-intensive activities. During each visit to California, Christian Moueix spends most of his time in the vineyard, not only because he loves it, but also to better understand the natural expression of the vintage. Following the maturation of the clusters allows us to harvest the grapes under the best conditions. When the fruit enters the cellar after harvest, it follows a natural process of fermentation with few interventions. Our approach is that of a minimalist's. Following fermentation, the wine is blended in a manner that expresses the natural qualities of the fruit, not forced into a style with preconceived notions. Read less

As good as the 2001 Napanook is, this wine is more intense. The fruit is lusher, the oak newer, the control more complete, but the kicker is the tannins. Theyrsquo;re powerful and dusty, and conceal the flamboyance, for now. This is a monster of a wine that desperately needs time before exploding. Hold until 2010 and beyond.

The impeccably made 2001 Dominus boasts a dense plum/purple color in addition to a fragrant, promising perfume of cocoa, cedar, coffee, roasted herbs, and copious quantities of black fruits. There are 7,000 cases of this 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, 4% Merlot, and 5% Petit Verdot blend. Rich and medium to full-bodied, with sweet but noticeable tannin, a layered mid-palate, and a long finish with obvious tannin, it will require 3ndash;4 years of cellaring. It should last for two decades.

Good ruby-red. Superripe aromas of plum, cherry, licorice, mocha, smoke and minerals. At once sweet and gripping, with very intense, nuanced flavors of cherry, plum, currant, tobacco, minerals and currant leaf. Despite the very high pH of 4.01, this shows no shortage of energy in the mouth. A muscular, firmly tannic, serious wine for aging. (A second sample that had been decanted for four hours prior to my visit was sweeter and more seamless, but still showed solid tannic spine.)

Saturated ruby-red. Ripe, nuanced nose combines black raspberry, currant, black plum, menthol, mocha and laurel. Chewy and superbly concentrated, with vibrant, sharply delineated flavors of red- and blackcurrant, tobacco, tar, chocolate, minerals and licorice. Powerful and juicy, with layers of flavor and terrific verve despite its obviously low acidity. The very broad tannins reach the front teeth. Promises to be a superb vintage for Dominus, and should also offer terrific early charm.

This vintage has a deep ruby color with a complex nose of cloves, blackberries, and dark chocolate. The structured tannins are enrobed with an enticing aroma. This wine explodes in the mid-palate, with essences of spices and worn leather. The long,

Very dry, and young in its fresh tannins and acids framing ripe, grapy currant flavors, mocha, vanilla and sweet dill. Very fine and balanced, with a powerful finish. Beautiful now, but should develop through this decade. Wine Enthusiast. A Proprietary Blend wine from California in USA. 2001 Dominus Estate Napanook Proprietary Red Wine 750ml
