Mosby Dolcetto Santa Barbara County 2008

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Dark. A bit heavy on the nose with notes of carob, sour berry fruit, old wood and autumnal forest floor notes topped with hints of Chinato and mint. Broad in the mouth but bright with fine acid and lovely red plum and berry fruit on a somewhat lightweight frame that develops some nuance on the backend. Earthy and savory this remains bright and taut in the mouth finishing with juicy black cherry and wild strawberry fruit and just a hint of candied baking spices on the long finish. 88pts

Bill’s winemaking interests began during his early college wrestling days in Oregon almost 50 years ago. "I fermented anything I could get my hands on," says Mosby. "I was — and still am — intrigued by the whole process." When Bill talks about his early winemaking days, he does so with an air of excitement. "As much science as we know today — technology and all that — we have barely scratched the surface when it comes to understanding the alchemic nature of wine," he explains. If you've visited the winery, then you’ve tasted his award-winning wines, caught a glimpse or two of his vineyards, and are somewhat familiar with his eccentricities. When asked to describe winemaker Bill Mosby’s character, wife Jeri answers with a smile: "Strangely enough, I would describe my husband much the same way I would characterize his wines. He’s about integrity, intelligence, strength, tenacity, passion and complexity. He’s rebellious — not afraid to dream, then make those dreams come true." Read less

87 points. The aroma opens with sweet notes of fresh rosemary, strawberry rhubarb pie filling, and some vanilla bean notes. There is a faint lavender component at the core, with some raspberry liqueur, and something that makes me think of shrub brush and brambles growing out of sheer granite. There is a plushness to this wine, but there is also a definite edgy quality that makes me expect a lot from it on the palate. The wine enters with dried cherries spritzed with some orange and berry juice flavors. This fades away quickly into a much earthier mid palate, full of desert dust, herbs de Provence, and a slightly charred quality. There is a kiss of oak, some peppercorn, and a nice balance between berries and herbs on the finish. This is an interesting wine, definitely with a pastoral sense of terroir. It’s earthy and fruity at the same time, accessible but interesting. This is a solid effort at the price, and worth trying.
