This wine is the secondary label of the second growth Château Montrose, from the spectacular 2000 vintage. It is a chance to taste heaven at an earthly price.

A superb second wine, 39% of the production made it into the 2000 La Dame de Montrose. Revealing abundant Merlot characteristics, it offers wonderful sweetness, plenty of fat, juicy, chocolatey, black cherry and currant flavors, and a hedonistic personality. It will drink well for 8–10 years. Don’t miss it! Drink now–2013.

This estate has frequently hit the bull's eye over recent vintages, and the 2000 Montrose is the finest effort produced since the compelling 1990 and 1989. This gigantically sized, tannic, backward effort boasts a saturated inky purple color followed by a huge nose of acacia flavors, crushed blackberries, creme de cassis, vanilla, hickory smoke, and minerals. Extremely full-bodied, powerful, dense, and multi-layered, this unreal Montrose should last for 30+ years. A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, this is a special wine that has exceptional purity and length. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2040.

Very dark ruby in the glass, almost blackish, with a narrow ruby rim. Syrupy legs, slow, and stained with purple tint. Pronounced aromatics — blackberry, cedar, plum compote, cloves, cardamom — some wafts of alcohol — showing big fruit. Also, an earthy, mushroom component, subtle, layering the nose with intriguing organics beneath the heavy fruit. The palate has a chewy texture, almost jammy, with dense fruitcake flavors, but the woodsy, cedar spice and firm structure prevent the fruit from seeming overly ripe. The tannins are still strong, but not overbearing — although delicious now, I may keep mine in the cellar for another five years, giving the massive fruit and tannins time to integrate.

The 2000 Montrose is just starting now to open and shows beautiful spices and dark fruits on the nose and palate. It

Aromas of mint, berry and licorice follow through to a full-bodied palate that is thick and rich yet refined and reserved. This is dense and well-structured, with loads of vanilla, berry and lightly roasted fruit. Powerful but still holding back. Com... Wine Spectator.
