Monti Barolo Bussia 2006

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Baked dough, burnt pizza crust, spicy, oregano herbal bright, nice herbal entry, not fruity but with good herbal, rooty savory flavors up front. Nice feel, easy, juicy, complex, touch of carrots and parsnips, fresh finish, a bit ethereal finish, clean, minty/herbal/carrot tops finish.

Located at Monforte d'Alba, in the heart of the Langhe hills, the estate was founded in 1996, when Pier Paolo Monti purchased a few vineyards in the area as well as the adjacent farmstead, and built the winery on the latter's premises. The vineyards of Bussia, San Martino, Val di Sacco, Camie, Chiese, are all within the Monforte commune and cover a total of approximately 10 hectares (25 acres) and 6 varieties: Barbera d'Alba, Nebbiolo destined for Barolo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot which go into Monti's Dossi Rossi Langhe DOC, and two white grapes, Riesling Renano (Rheinriesling) and Chardonnay, which make up the white Langhe DOC, L'Aura. The newly built winery is functional in layout, state-of-the-art in equipment, with separate, temperature-controlled areas for each phase from fermentation to bottling. In the underground cellars, the wines are matured and aged in oak. Attentive vineyard management, modern vinification and meticulous élevage yield a range of characterful, top-quality wines. AWE blind tasting - dark, dirty, earthy, charry, spiced, antiseptic, a bit lean in the mouth, nice quality to the tannins up front, good acids, nice feel,, decent earthy flavors, drying, inelegant but with some character, tough and drying, some nice length too, 85-86
