Monthaven Winery Merlot 3 Octavin Home Wine Bar 2008

Member Review by Onin24eagle:

The 2008 vintage has reached it's "expiration date". I got this for 75% off at a local liquor store since it expired about a month ago, which means I paid a mere $6 for 4 bottles worth of wine. I was unaware that box wines actually had expiration dates. Anyway, I digress.... There is some really nice chocolate and raspberry on the nose. Take fresh raspberries and drizzle them with Hershey's syrup and that's what I smell. Nice fruity merlot with lots of black cherry. Pretty good tannin and a very long, smooth finish. I'm quite surprised at how good this stuff actually is. It tastes awesome with some sharp cheddar on multi grain club crackers but I really wish I had a big porterhouse steak right now... I happen to dabble in home winemaking and I have quite a few empty bottles lying around (several hundred, in fact) and a couple hundred new corks. I might just go back to the liquor store and buy up the remaining inventory and just stick it in bottles. Actually, forget "might"....I'm definitely going to do that. I've had some very good "box" wines recently (wineries seem to be getting better at that category lately) and this has to be one of the best I've tried, if not THE best. It might have something to do with the fact that it has reached its expiration date, what I mean by that is that it is fully "matured". There probably aren't a lot of these out there for that reason but if you come across one give it a try ( and see if you can point out the expiration date and get a nice discount to boot!).

Coconut Rice Sweet Potato Cheesecake

RiceSelect's creamy Arborio gets blended with sweet potato, coconut milk and vanilla to create this decadent cheesecake. Pairs well with Saunternes; a white dessert wine that has hints of coconut from aging in oak barrels.
