Montevetrano Colli di Salerno Robo 2000
Three Glasses, Gambero Rosso: Honours go again to Silvia Imparato and her Montevetrano, a wine that is loved, eagerly tracked down, drunk and collected, all over the world... Montevetrano remains a cult wine, respectfully discussed across the globe. Since it is a cult, the seventh Guide Three Glass award puts us firmly among the faithful... the 2000 edition of this 60 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 30 per cent merlot and aglianico monster is one of the finest. The colour is a purple-tinged dark ruby. The aromas are intense but still very youthful with small wild berry fruits and ripe cherry that are lifted by tobacco, spice and an elegant touch of vanilla. The palate has its usual solid structure, the richness and cleanliness given by perfectly ripe fruit, evenness throughout and tannins of beautiful finesse. It feels warm, enveloping and soft on the palate, and finishes long and commandingly, with fruit and new oak on the aftertaste. Congratulations to Silvia and to Riccardo Cotarella, the oenologist who conceived this masterpiece. (2003)

The 1996 possesses a minimum of two decades of aging potential. it boasts an opaque purple color, and dense, thick aromas of black raspberry ice cream intermingled with roasted herbs, and grilled meats. In the mouth, the wine is rich and full-bodied, with an unctuous texture, loads of blackberry fruit, sweet tannin, and a layered, thick, low acid finish. The 1998 will benefit from 2ndash;3 more years of cellaring, and will drink well for two decades.
This is once again staggering in its complexity and richness. As I have said before, proprietor Silvia Imparato is a shining star. Sadly, her small vineyard of 10 acres produces only 500 cases from a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Aglianico. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered after spending 12 months in 100% new French oak. Amazingly, the new oak is completely adsorbed by the fruit. Its mild blackberry/vivid blueberry, fabulously fragrant, floral-scented nose jumps from the glass. Opaque purple-colored, with a layered, naturally textured feel, this full-bodied, spectacularly concentrated, multidimensional wine must be tasted to be believed.
A singular aromatic profile of blueberries, spice box, white flowers, and assorted fruits is followed by an opulent wine with extraordinary purity, medium to full body, and beautifully integrated tannin, acidity, and wood. It is a wine of uncharactersitic seamlessness as well as compelling intensity and length.
One of southern Italyrsquo;s greatest reds ever. Intense aromas of blackberries, mint, grilled meat and raisins rise from the glass. The wine is full-bodied, with masses of mouthpuckering tannins, but a long, fruity finish. A wonderful Bordeaux-style blend. Best from 2001 through 2006.

Silvia Imparatorsquo;s path breaking blend of Cabernet, Merlot, and Aglianico seems to do best in odd-numbered years mdash; 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, and now this beautiful 2001 mdash; even though I continue to have a soft spot for the 1992, a shot across the bow which seems to have helped wake up a then slumbering region with an enormous potential. Blackish ruby in color, warm, spicy, and penetrating in aroma with expansive notes of black currants, graphite, mint, and licorice, it is both concentrated and lush on the palate with a solid structure and swelling volume which promise fifteen years of life ahead.
