Montes Syrah Folly(2001)

Description: This peppery and full-bodied wine’s deep ruby-red color reveals the concentration and quality of the fruit. On the palate, there are layers of ripe black fruit, black cherries, and ripe plums, carefully integrated with the smokiness and gamey notes typical of Syrah. The wine is meaty, with a well-balanced structure accompanied by distinctive, velvety tannins. Montes Folly’s blockbuster style and lingering finish attest to the wine’s pedigree.
Denomination of Origin: Santa Cruz Valley, Apalta single estate.
Oak Aging: 18 months in all new French oak.

Very deep and dark. Impressive complex nose, so many spices and funghi. Strong attack, perfectly balanced, powerful all over, never ending finish. Won't look bad on a high end Syrah (or Shiraz) tasting. Beat an other chilean (EQ Syrah) by 2 points. [93]

Only the second vintage of this top Montes wine, all Syrah from the steepest slopes of Montes' Apalta vineyards and worth the money. Much more refreshing than the 2001. Extremely dense yet glossy and satin-textured. A sweet start but real Syrah savour on the mid palate and finish. This is very serious wine with a beginning, middle and end. Should provide pleasure for many years.

CS. This vintage is drier, with more acid, structure and potential. Dense and concentrated, it makes me want to taste it in a couple of years.
