External Reviews for Montes Syrah Colchagua Valley Alpha
The 2008 Alpha Syrah is purple/black in color with an alluring nose of smoke, game, mineral, underbrush, and blueberry. Medium- to full-bodied, succulent and chewy on the palate, this lengthy effort is likely to evolve for 1andndash;2 years but can be approached now.
Opens nicely, with hints of olive, earth, rubber and leather. The palate is juicy and lively, while flavors of coconut, toast and black fruit meld together in good fashion. A fresh, clean style of Syrah thatandrsquo;s forward but not hard or tannic.

Alluring, with roasted coffee and vanilla bean notes giving way to a supple, rich palate of dark cherry, mulled currant and blackberry fruit, all pushed by a nicely integrated, loam- and grilled herb-tinged finish. Drink now through 2010.
Touching up against syrupy, this ultra-rich style of Syrah from Apalta in Colchagua is pumped full of coconut, barrel char and deep berry fruit. Itrsquo;s a saturated Syrah with palate-coating berry, vanilla and spice flavors. Itrsquo;s also slightly candied and immensely ripe. Finishes with barrel notes, chocolate and thickness.
The 2007 Alpha Syrah offers an attractive nose of pepper, sage, blueberry, and incense. Concentrated, nicely balanced, and with a 45-second finish, this classy Syrah will profit from 2ndash;3 years of cellaring and offer prime drinking 2011 to 2019.
From the "La Finca" Estate, in the Apalta Valley, this is the scarcest of the ALPHA line, and it shows how promising the Apalta Valley slopes are. Yield is very low, only 6 tons per hectare. It has been aged in French oak for one year and had only one soft filtering. 7% of Cabernet Sauvignon and a 3% of Viognier are added to the final blend. Of intense ruby red color, it has a great aroma with floral, tobacco and leathery notes. Strong and full bodied to the palate, with soft and mature tannins, this hss a very long, elegant and satisfying after taste. A superb Syrah.
