Montes Alpha "M" is a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The steep slopes of Apalta in Central Chile provide the perfect growing conditions for the grapes, with many hours of sunlight and the cooling breezes of the ocean. Notes of coffee, tobacco, and black plums burst from the glass.

Wine Spectator ReviewRated 95Very sleek and refined, but with loads in reserve, this shows layers of mocha, espresso, bittersweet coffee, mineral and currant paste all framed by dense but supper supple tannins. Beautifully rendered, and the best vintage yet for this winery's flagship wine. Best from 2009 through 2015.Wine Tasting NotesA powerful wine with very good level of soft and rounded tannins. Intense dark red color. The wine is elegant and has a very well defined character. There is an pleasant and harmonious marriage of fruit and the French oak.. The structure of this wine will keep it for at least 20 years.

The 2005 Alpha Merlot offers an attractive nose of cedar, spice box, cassis, and black cherry. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied with plenty of ripe fruit and good depth. The finish is medium long and pure. Drink this tasty Merlot over the next 4–6 years. Over recent years, Montes has been one of the standard-bearers of quality wines from Chile under the leadership of Aurelio Montes. The lineup is top-notch from entry level to top-of-the-line.

Lovely balance, with black cherry, currant and brier flavors offset by hints of cocoa, vanilla and spice. Full-bodied, but elegant, with nice length on the finish. Well-done. Drink now through 2004.

Good medium-weight mix of plum, briar and sweet vanilla and toast notes, with a juicy finish that fleshes out nicely in the glass. 15 percent Carmenegrave;re. Drink now.

Winemaker's Notes:

The slopes of Apalta in Colchagua (in the Central Valley) enclose a half-moon shaped area with a unique micro-climate, defined by the mountains and one of Chile's widest rivers, the Tinguiririca. The best slopes in this valley, with a 15% average inclination and over 45° in the upper slopes, are found on our property where they grow the grapes for MONTES ALPHA "M". Having a west-south-west exposure allows for exactly the right number of hours of sunlight and provides an ocean breeze (the sea is only 30 kms away). The very warm days but cool winds at night with their lowering temperatures give a micro-climate particularly suited for growing red grape varieties. Add to this, the poor soils with little organic matter, drip irrigation, and the high density of vines (over 4.800 per hectare) make growing conditions "just right". Montes Alpha "M" is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (80%), Merlot (5%), Cabernet Franc (10%) and Petit Verdot (5 %), which links all the other grapes. The Cabernet Franc enhances the elegance of the first variety, and is in total harmony with the softness of the second and austerity of the third. Vintage 2005 can be considered one of the very best of the last 10 years. With rather cold previous Winter and Spring, the ripeness process was slow and lengthy, allowing Aurelio Montes to have great fruit expression and deep colour. This wine, richer in colour and with intense character, shows the elegance of the grapes of the Apalta estate. The wine has soft and rounded solid tannins that will allow it to be cellared for many years. A well balanced structure and perfect integration with the French new oak barrels. It has a delightful long lingering finish.
