Montes Merlot Colchagua Valley Alpha 2004

Winemaker's Notes:

Description: Winter previous to 2004 harvest was normal to high in terms of rainfall and temperature was cold enough to fulfill the plant needs. During Spring, bud burst was 7 to 10 days in advance and so flowering was also about 10 days in advance. Summer was a little bit warm and dry, so irrigation was necessary to allow the plant to keep its normal process of ripening. We did the leaf removal (canopy management) late in the season. Veraison was on the same period as usual. Elegant at the same time powerful with very good level of soft tannins. Intense dark red colour. The wine has structure, power and a very well defined character. The 5% of Petit Verdot is adding an extra element of complexity. There is an pleasant and harmonious marriage of fruit and the French oak with a delightfull long finish. The structure of this wine will keep it for at least 20 years. Denomination of Origin: Santa Cruz Valley, Apalta single estate from the steeps slopes. Oak Aging: 18 months in all new French oak. Filtering: Very light filtering, avoiding over processing. Yield of Vineyard: 3.5/4 Tons/Ha. (1,4 tons per acre). Grape Variety: Cabernet Sauvignon 80% + Cabernet Franc 10% + Merlot 5% and Petit Verdot 5%. Cellaring Recommendations: Over 15 years. Recommended Serving Temperature: 18º C (17º C – 19º C). Decanting: Strongly recommended for one hour minimum.

One of Chile’s most renowned winemakers – Auriello Montes Sr. – blazed the path of bringing his country’s premium selections to the world when he joined forces with wine industry vet Douglas Murray and partners Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand in 1988. Together, they formed Viña Montes, which became the standard for premium Chilean wines with the introduction of Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon. In the quarter century since then, the company has been instrumental in raising awareness, affinity, and acclaim for Chilean wines in over 100 countries worldwide. Hailing from Apalta in Chile’s Cochalgua Valley, Viña Montes produces 950,000 cases annually through its vineyards La Finca de Apalta (in Apalta); El Arcangel Estate (in Marchigue); and Los Nogales Estate (in Curico). Among the company labels are Montes Alpha “M,” Montes Folly, Purple Angel, Montes Alpha, Montes Classic Series, Montes Cherub, and Montes Twins. In 2004, a new cellar was created at Apalta through an investment of more than US$7 million. Chilean architect Samuel Claro, from the Claro and Swinburn Agency, created the space, which was decorated by Paula Gutierrez, a nationally renowned designer. Here, technology and equipment reside in a peaceful environment incorporating Feng Shui elements – water, air, metal and wood- to encourage harmony and a positive atmosphere, enhancing the total experience and resulting wines. maple and berries in nose. Cocoa, vanilla, blueberry, but earthy and not oversweet. Finish medium length, dry with cocoa and berries.

Big and forward, with spicy, pungent aromas and also a softening hint of bread dough. The palate features snappy red fruit with drying oak in support. The tannic structure holds its own but doesn't rise up too much. A weighty, driving wine with snazzy and heft.

The 2005 Alpha Merlot offers an attractive nose of cedar, spice box, cassis, and black cherry. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied with plenty of ripe fruit and good depth. The finish is medium long and pure. Drink this tasty Merlot over the next 4-6 years. Over recent years, Montes has been one of the standard-bearers of quality wines from Chile under the leadership of Aurelio Montes. The lineup is top-notch from entry level to top-of-the-line.

Unquestionably one of the finest Chilean Merlots, the Montes boasts robust blackberry and blueberry fruits with hints of sweet vanilla and cedar aromas. Full-bodied, rich, sweet and silky on the palate with dusty tannins and a long finish--a fabulous Merlot! Built to last - structured, yet luscious, drink now or cellar. The Montes wines are consistently top quality and the Alpha Merlot distinguishes itself as one of our best fine wine values.
