Montes Cherub Rosé of Syrah 2017

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Not particularly aromatic with faint suggestions of watermelon floating beneath earthy, lightly spicy and mineral top notes. Round and polished in the mouth, this is a wine of texture. the flavors are subtle, darkly fruited, hinting at chocolate with some meaty and juniper toned accents adding complexity but the main impression one gets here is how big and smooth this is in the mouth. The fruit takes on a tarter cast on the backend, still rather dark fruited though and then reverts to an herb, tobacco and mineral quality, along with hints of blackberries, on the fairly long finish. Not my style but I can see this working well with some red meat this summer,, or duck. 87pts

One of Chile’s most renowned winemakers – Auriello Montes Sr. – blazed the path of bringing his country’s premium selections to the world when he joined forces with wine industry vet Douglas Murray and partners Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand in 1988. Together, they formed Viña Montes, which became the standard for premium Chilean wines with the introduction of Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon. In the quarter century since then, the company has been instrumental in raising awareness, affinity, and acclaim for Chilean wines in over 100 countries worldwide. Hailing from Apalta in Chile’s Cochalgua Valley, Viña Montes produces 950,000 cases annually through its vineyards La Finca de Apalta (in Apalta); El Arcangel Estate (in Marchigue); and Los Nogales Estate (in Curico). Among the company labels are Montes Alpha “M,” Montes Folly, Purple Angel, Montes Alpha, Montes Classic Series, Montes Cherub, and Montes Twins. In 2004, a new cellar was created at Apalta through an investment of more than US$7 million. Chilean architect Samuel Claro, from the Claro and Swinburn Agency, created the space, which was decorated by Paula Gutierrez, a nationally renowned designer. Here, technology and equipment reside in a peaceful environment incorporating Feng Shui elements – water, air, metal and wood- to encourage harmony and a positive atmosphere, enhancing the total experience and resulting wines. If you're a fan of Syrah, particularly cool climate Chilean Syrah the Montes Cherub Syrah Rose is a great bottle to open this spring. The rose holds on to the cherry and spiciness of Syrah, but refreshes and pairs well with lighter foods, yet it's bigger rose and commands a presence in your mouth. This is a perfect example the amazing range of Syrah from Chile.

This was a very happy little Rose. The nose was all light fruits, almost strawberry and white plum. It had a tart finish, very pleasant, uncomplicated. It was playful like the label. I enjoyed this wine with broccoli salad, white chicken chili, and croissants at home.

So I have been in to Chilean wines… well I was silly and got this one of the notes and the bottles label. “how cute I cherub” RULE number one in buying wine don’t go off the pic on the label. This is a rose of syrah, I love syrah I new this was going to be deferent but wow.. I was soooo expecting a more fruit forward rose, its SO dry and tart you cant taste any flavor, it has a slightly sweet nose and I hint of strawberry but the alcohol is overwhelming, I didn’t have any of the notes of “rose and red fruit” sorry boys and Colchagua Valley in Chile but for me you missed this one big time

Good, not great. A touch too fruity to be taken seriously, but there's some nice strawberry fruit in here. Went well with roasted halibut.

Plenty of strawberry/cherry lashed fruit with the dry tannins giving a sophisticated mouthful despite the cherryade colour, glowing as if radiated. Ripe, gentle fruit to the fore, dry tannins to the finish, And, always an indicator of decent quality, a long lasting aftertaste. http://www.spittoon.biz/montes_cherub_rose_2008_colcha.html

I loved this rose. I tend to shy away from Rose normally because I find them too sweet. This one was perfect. It was dry, with good body. Aromas of strawberry/raspberry, and no overpowering sweetness afterwards. The colour, too, was a fantastic deep pink. I would definitely buy this one again. We had it before dinner, and with pork tenderloin - and it was perfect either way. It's a great price too!

After several years of experimenting, Aurelio Montes settled on producing a rosé from Syrah (the grape he made famous in Chile with the country's first Ultra Premium Syrah, Montes Folly). Montes Cherub is a seductive, elegant, dry wine, with an intense cherry-pink color. Expressive of the grape and its terroir, it shows distinct Syrah character: spiciness and hints of strawberry, rose and orange peel. There is a strong backbone of acidity with residual tannins that gives the wine structure. For a rosé, it shows good fruit concentration and a richness in texture across the palate that leads to a delightfully long finish. - Winery

Montes' Cherub is a seductive, elegant, dry wine, with an intense cherry-pink color. It is a well-made expression of the grape variety and terroir. On the nose and the palate, it demonstrates a distinctive Syrah character with spiciness and hints of strawberries, rose and orange peel. With good fruit concentration, it shows richness in texture across the palate that leads to a delightfully long finish. It has a strong backbone of acidity and a slight amount of tannin that gives the wine a defined structure. - Winery

The 2008 Alpha Syrah is purple/black in color with an alluring nose of smoke, game, mineral, underbrush, and blueberry. Medium- to full-bodied, succulent and chewy on the palate, this lengthy effort is likely to evolve for 1–2 years but can be approached now.
