User Reviews for Montes Carménère Colchagua Valley Purple Angel
Add your reviewThis wine has been brooding in my cellar for about 4 years and I am not a believer in antipodal wine longevity. Perhaps I should change that opinion for this sanguineous wine is holding strong at age 7 years with notes of cassis on the nose followed by semi-sweet blackberry and bitter almond on the palate. Very mouth filling and warm, the wine is very well crafted and to be recommended. 90 points. May be held another 5 years at least.

Weingut: MontesLand: ChileRegion: Colchagua ValleyRebsorten: 92% Carmenère, 8% Petit VerdotAlkoholgehalt: 14,5 Vol. %Säuregehalt: 3,5 g/lRestsüße: 2,5 g/lInhalt: 0,75 lEmpfohlene Serviertemperatur: 16 - 18°CFassreife: in Barriques gereift (18 Monate)Auszeichnungen des Montes Purple Angel 2006:96 Parker Punkte91 Punkte- The Wine Spectator Mai 2009 Rotwein > Chile > Colchagua Valley
A very ambitious style, with dark, exotic toast leading the way for fig sauce, currant paste and Turkish coffee flavors that manage to stay pure and driven. The long, very polished finish let a mineral note echo. Carmenère and Petit Verdot. Drink now... Wine Spectator. A Carmenere wine from Rapel Valley in Chile. 2006 Montes Purple Angel 750ml
Winemaker's Notes:
Carmenère resurfaced in Chile only in 1993, after being believed extinct since phylloxera hit Bordeaux, its original home, around 1880. In Chile, its sole home at the moment, they consider it their "Chilean variety" and call it the "Jurassic Park" grape, returned from extinction. Montes pioneered the Chilean wine scene by creating super-premium wines, including the Montes Alpha range, and icons such as Montes Alpha M and Montes Folly. Montes also led the way to quality by planting on steep mountain slopes. But Montes, Chile's wine pioneer, also knows when to wait - Aurelio Montes preferred to take his time and develop the Carmenère variety until he was satisfied that it could be a top contender, the very best Montes could possibly produce. It was worth the wait. This new beauty (a blend of 92% Carmenère and 8% Petit Verdot, with 18 months in new French and American oak barrels) is stunning wine and provides a very interesting alternative to the major international grape variatels more commonly found in Chile.
