Editorial Reviews for Montes Carménère Colchagua Valley Alpha
A hint of VA greets the nose followed by rather wooly, vaguely animal notes and plenty of shaved bitter chocolate all piled up over dried red berry fruits. On entry, this is rather focused and elegant; but it balloons in the mouth, revealing impressive concentration and depth. The fruit remains youthful but not fruity and while the oak is prominent, it’s balanced out by the fruit. This grows into a rich, almost chewy wine with a nice blend of roasted coffee bean, toasty spice and nuanced herb notes all accenting the subtle fruit. The finish is dark, spicy and oily, recalling coffee beans and licorice with a peppery spice on the finale. 91pts
User Reviews for Montes Carménère Colchagua Valley Alpha
Add your reviewHeavy peppery sharp nose, not much fruit, a little bit of licorice. The body is equally sharply defined, with vegetative and barrel notes. A little bit of strawberry fruit in the finish. Kind of a punkish/goth wine personality wise.
Inky purple almost opaque, very dense. On the nose, chocolate, mocha, coffee, blackberry and black cherry, hints of sage. Moderate plus tart acidity, dry with moderate very well-integrated alcohol, high intensity of fruit, full body, flavors of dense black stewed fruits, cassis, mulberry a touch of prune, bilberry or blueberry. Black fruits very nice, not too overtly fruity. High tannins a bit astringent, a hint of greenness and a long finish.
I love malbec but have recently discovered Alpha Carmenere- and WOW. Aurelio Montes has never let me down as this is no exception. Very concentrated with a unique spice I couldn't quite place. Hints of black cherry and ripe plum brought to a nice long finish. I can't wait for the next vintage.

WA 91 Pts. - According to the Wine Advocate: The 2008 Alpha Carmenere is a glass-coating opaque purple with a nose of damp earth, mineral, sage, thyme, tobacco, and blueberry. Dense and full-bodied on the palate, it reveals layers of ripe fruit, lots of spice, and enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years. It will deliver prime drinking from 2012 to 2020.
Winemaker's Notes:
The grapes for this lovely Carmenère come from the Arcangel Estate located at the very West of Colchagua valley - only 11 miles (18 Kms) from the Pacific Ocean. The relatively cold climate allows Montes to ripen the grapes slowly and smoothly, reaching full maturation and fruit expression. The soil profile is mostly clay that provides strength and power to the wine. This Carmenère / Cabernet blend is a deep and lively ruby red colour. The wine has a very elegant and evident Carmenère tipicity, showing lovely black pepper aromas with hints of red berries, chocolate, a bit of vanilla and black plums. In the mouth it is distinctively smooth, with rounded and soft tannins. Long finish. The oak is beautifully integrated and balanced.
