One of Chile’s most renowned winemakers – Auriello Montes Sr. – blazed the path of bringing his country’s premium selections to the world when he joined forces with wine industry vet Douglas Murray and partners Alfredo Vidaurre and Pedro Grand in 1988. Together, they formed Viña Montes, which became the standard for premium Chilean wines with the introduction of Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon. In the quarter century since then, the company has been instrumental in raising awareness, affinity, and acclaim for Chilean wines in over 100 countries worldwide. Hailing from Apalta in Chile’s Cochalgua Valley, Viña Montes produces 950,000 cases annually through its vineyards La Finca de Apalta (in Apalta); El Arcangel Estate (in Marchigue); and Los Nogales Estate (in Curico). Among the company labels are Montes Alpha “M,” Montes Folly, Purple Angel, Montes Alpha, Montes Classic Series, Montes Cherub, and Montes Twins. In 2004, a new cellar was created at Apalta through an investment of more than US$7 million. Chilean architect Samuel Claro, from the Claro and Swinburn Agency, created the space, which was decorated by Paula Gutierrez, a nationally renowned designer. Here, technology and equipment reside in a peaceful environment incorporating Feng Shui elements – water, air, metal and wood- to encourage harmony and a positive atmosphere, enhancing the total experience and resulting wines. Hugely aromatic with lots of pineapple and mango fruit layered over a base of fine, toasty and allspice laced oak. This start out on the palate with fairly big power, then broadens on the palate in a lush, creamy style. The flavors are rich with vanilla, mango and melon, along with some creamy pineapple fruit towards the back of the palate. The acid and a touch of minerality emerges on the moderately long finish which shows a dusty edge and reveals more subtle green apple peel and lime pith flavors. This is a very ripe flavor profile, and while the texture remains attractively fresh if broad it’s blend of tropical fruit and vanilla spice doesn’t work for me. 86pts

From a small typical restaurant white wine glass - Lightly oaky on the nose with a typically citrus/sweet chardonnay expression of fruit. There are notes of smoke, chalk and graham cracker that add interest but are rather aggressive. Big and rich in the mouth but a bit thick across the palate finishing with good green fruits. From Bottega del Vino's Chardonnay stem - more expressive oak tones reveal layered vanilla, light toast and hazelnut butter tones. The fruit here is more tropical with a custard edge and a nice blend of spiced, roasted pears and sauteed pineapple. In the mouth this is soft and expansive with a broad, elegant mouthfeel and better cut than from the smaller glass. The flavors are much the same though this is perhaps more citrus and tropical toned with a long pineapple syrup note on the finish. A definite improvement aromatically and texturally when using the Bottega del Vino stem. 88pts

Delicious, full-bodied, complex and creamy in the mid-palate, our Alpha Chardonnay is one of the few Chilean whites wines that will improve with age. The 1998 vintage was selected as ‘World Champion Chardonnay’ by Slow Food of Italy, after simultaneous tastings in 26 cities around the world, covered live by BBC-TV in London. Grapes are sourced from the renowned white wine area, Casablanca Valley. Fermented and aged in French oak barrels for one year; 40% of the wine undergoes secondary ‘malolactic fermentation’ to enhance buttery flavors. A monthly stirring of the wine or batonage enhances flavor and aroma complexity. ~ The Winery ~

Robust and smokey, with a citric acid finish. Solidly built with a bit of leather and an enjoyably sour aroma. Not bad.

Starts out a bit short and flat, with a bouquet housing basic Chardonnay aromas of pear, apple and oak. The palate is more or less similar, with apple and melon flavors spreading wide across the mouth. But where?s the precision and zest? Those key qualities, which we?ve previously lauded in this wine, are not entirely on vacation but they?re not fully evident either.

Volles, blasses Strohgelb, weiches, frisches Aroma von reifen Pfirsichen, tropischen Früchten sowie Zitrusfrüchten. Ein trockener, milder Wein mit einem langanhaltenden Abgang.
