Montenidoli Vernaccia di San Gimignano Fiore 2012

Member Review by vin0vin0:

This is just a fantastic Italian white. Elisabetta makes some fantastic wines and this is just another great example. The color has a bit of a golden hue and the nose carries a bit of floral notes. The best part is the taste of honeysuckle, honey, lemon curd with a creamy and rich texture, decent acidity and a long finish. There is a lot going on with this wine, give it some time and you'll be very happy!

We came to Montenidoli, called by the spirituality of the gold-backed Madonnas with Child painted by the 13th century Sienese Masters, works that broadcast a unique and admirable message to the world. Sergio, the Patriarch, was a teacher, and we had nine children with special needs to take care of during the summers, all of whom quickly set out on their own paths. And when they left, one child remained to be weaned, the most difficult: our abandoned lands. For when we came the land, superb ground first cultivated by the Etruscans, then the Romans, and then, at the end of the Middle Ages, by the Knights Templar, had been abandoned: The Knights gave it to farmers, who left in the early 1900s, drawn by the promise of industry and called to fight in the two Great Wars. All we found were a few vines, overgrown by brambles, and clutching the trunks of the elm trees that supported them, according to a planting system as old as viticulture itself. But Elisabetta had the land in her blood, thanks to her family, which had cultivated vines and olive trees in Custozza, not far from Verona, since the 1700s, and also thanks to her childhood, spent wandering the vineyards of Valpolicella. We began to break up the clods of earth and make hummus, raising earthworms and also rabbits, for their precious manure. Now, we leave the hoeing to the roots of plants we sow in the vineyards, and till under each spring. Sulfur and copper are the only substances we use to treat infection. And only if absolutely necessary, because we find sunlight and clean air to be the best medicine to make our vines healthy, strong, and resistant to disease and bad weather. Read less
