Winemaker's Notes:

This Zinfandel shows beautiful ruby red color with medium density. The nose is rich with barrel spice and toast notes reminiscent of rustic bread fresh from a wood-fired oven along with bright red briar-berry, cedar, anise, and a hint of tobacco. Bright yet soft on the palate, this wine opens on the mid-palate with juicy fruits and complex barrel spice followed by tannins that persist through a lovely finish of dried fruit and black licorice. Barrel aged 14 months in 50% French and 50% American oak (13% new). Alcohol 14.5%.

Chateau Montelena's rich history began on a chilly fall morning when Alfred L. Tubbs spaded over and inspected the soil where he thought of planting estate vineyards. He'd heard the Napa Valley was the best place to grow grapes in California. A deal was struck and in January of 1882 the San Francisco entrepreneur owned 254 acres of rugged land just two miles north of Calistoga at the base of Mount Saint Helena. The soils are well drained, stony and loose – perfect for the vine cuttings he would plant. It took less than a decade to turn his dream into reality. First Tubbs planted his vineyards, then he built his Chateau, and in 1886 he imported a French-born winemaker. By 1896 his winery, christened Chateau Montelena (a contracted form of Mount Saint Helena), was the seventh largest in the Napa Valley. The next chapter began with the renaissance of Chateau Montelena Winery and the Estate vineyard. Under the leadership of Jim Barrett, the vineyard was cleared and replanted, and the Chateau outfitted with modern winemaking equipment. He assembled a team to oversee the vineyard and winemaking, then grew and contracted for the highest-quality grapes in the Napa Valley. In 1972 wines were made for the first time. Decades later, this celebrated family-owned winery continues to thrive with Jim Barrett at the helm. The Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon and Montelena Estate Zinfandel are grown in one of the world's most unique winegrowing properties. The Estate vineyard is comprised of varied terrain, from flat to steep hillsides. The vineyard gently slopes downward towards its base, where a small patch of sedimentary soil was deposited by the settling of an ancient ocean or lake. Read less

Bright, ripe nose of bramble fruit and spice. Raspberry, white pepper and baking spice. On the palate, it feels richbut isn't jammy. It has a nice balance of bright acidity, ripe red berry fruit, tannin and spice. Nothing leans too heavy on the profile, making it well integrated and nicely structured. Mid palate, there are some nice red and black plum aromas and flavors. The finish is a tad hot with alcohol and all the flavor dissipates leaving you with just acid and alcohol. That's it's only downside. 3/4/12

Blueberry and cherry nose. Nice balanced cranberry and chestnut flavors in the mouth. Raspberry finish, with a bit of a bitter chocolate core, nice.

Tons of oak on the nose right out of the bottle, but dissipated nicely with decanting for about a half hour. It then smelled like the pork roast that my husband had been cooking; lesson learned, don't decant too close to the stove. Fairly full body, with moderate acid and tannins. Definite cranberry notes, but not excessively fruity; spice and earth predominate. A fairly good match for the pork roast, although almost a little too bold for "the other white meat."

Somewhat flabby and lacking in structure, but exhibits good fruit. Could have done with more barrel age, perhaps.

Earthy, chewy, a nice peppery bite when paired with some spicy food (really good with a peppercorn filet), and full of berries. Even so, more on the brambly and tobacco side than fruit. I really enjoyed it now, with or without food. I will try to avoid the temptation to drink it all now, and save some bottles for a few years.

The 2009 Zinfandel is a pretty, fleshy wine laced with dried cherries, crushed flowers, plums, worn-in leather and spices. Layers of fruit build gracefully to the round, caressing finish. This is an attractive wine, even if it isn?t totally varietally exp

Good medium red. Aromas of blueberry, violet and licorice lifted by spearmint high tones. Distinctly dry for this bottling, with intense but somewhat light flavors of dark berries, licorice, menthol and bitter chocolate. A hint of exotic orange peel emerges on the back end, which features a fine dusting of tannins and comes off as a bit dry but not hard. A 60/40 blend of primitivo and zinfandel. The spring frost caused "cold damage" leading to smaller crop levels, noted assistant winemaker Matt Crafton.

The nose is loaded with aromas from tobacco and cedar-spice box to classic Zinfandel briar-berry and bright strawberry on top. Sweet vanilla notes lead into a smooth, ripe berry finish.

Red-ruby. Blackberry, spices and Tellicherry pepper on the nose, plus a whiff of tarry reduction. Supple and broad, with modest density to its black fruit, licorice and spice flavors. Finishes with notes of chocolate and herbs. Juicy in the mouth but could use a bit more grip. Im not sure I would have guessed zinfandel. The medium ruby-hued 2007 Zinfandel Estate offers a fragrant briery nose revealing notions of pepper, earth, fruit cake and spice. This fully mature Zin is best drunk sooner rather than later given its good but uninspiring constitution. ** SOLD OUT **

From dry-farmed, head-pruned Zinfandel vineyards planted in Calistoga, Montelena's dark ruby-hued 2003 Zinfandel Estate offers a big, briery, cherry, pepper, loamy soil, and earthy-scented bouquet. Enjoy this spicy, rich, full-bodied effort over the next 3-4 years.
