Initial "Tart" nose--smells a tad sour. A few minutes of air seems to help it--shifts to something of a spicy thing, anise, clove. Not a lot of fruit on the initial taste--not necessarily a bad thing. Earthy and woody flavors--smoky. Still some noticeably tannin around the edge of the tongue. Little bit of a bitter thing on the back of the throat. Best thing might be the finish--very mellow and enjoyable and lasts for quite a few seconds. US$19.99 at Total Wines in 2011.

Nice enough Rioja Gran Reserva, but not great. Lots of dark fruit, plum and dried fig, some smoke and earth tones with a little bit of that tempranillo mustiness.

If you like traditionally styled Rioja then this will be highly appealing. Far Niente Sold Out! From the impressive 2001 vintage, the centuries old aging process for Gran Reserva of a minimum 60 months, 18 of them in oak, assures that this Bodegas Montecillo Rioja Gran Reserva is now at a peak of perfection! Wine Enthusiast Magazine scored it 91 points saying "If you like a traditionally styled Rioja then this will be highly appealing. Aromas of dill, tobacco and dried fruits are enticing, while the palate veers toward subtle fruits, more tobacco and finely intertwined acidity. This is a wonderful wine from an excellent vintage, thus there’s absolutely no reason why it shouldn’t age gracefully for another decade."
