The outstanding dense ruby/purple-hued 2001 Monte Negro Crianza boasts a big, rich nose of roasted herbs, scorched earth, black currants, and cherries. Dense, with luscious fruit, excellent purity, and a heady, long finish, this youthful Crianza promises to drink well for 5-7 years.
Freshness is in demand as the nose shows dampness, tobacco and wood more than bright fruit. In the mouth, there's oak driven flavors of vanilla and tobacco accenting basic red fruit. Has a lot of snap and zest but comes off kind of thin and on the mature side. Drink now for best results; its lifespan appears limited.
The 2005 Monte Negro Tinto Joven is a superb value. Made from 100% estate grown Tempranillo, it sees no oak. Saturated purple in color, it offers pure spicy blueberry aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, it has surprising depth and concentration to its ripe, layered blue fruits. Drink this Spanish fruit bomb over the next four years.
