Monte del Fra Bardolino 2009

Winemaker's Notes:

Monte del Frà translates as Hill of Monks and is located in the heart of the Bianco di Custoza DOC. It now consists of over 65 hectares of vineyards owned and run by brothers Eligio and Claudio Bonomo. It is one of the most progressive and dynamic producers in the region and has been particularly innovative in its adoption of modern viticultural techniques. Eligio Bonomo was the first producer in the region to retrain the traditionally 1.6m high cordon vines to lower-trained, single guyot systems. In the winery the Bonomos use thoroughly modern, temperature-controlled fermentation and storage facilities in order to preserve the aromatic freshness in their wines. Ruby red in colour, the nose evokes cherry, morello cherry, spices (pepper), and flowers. The palate is pleasingly velvety, undemanding, elegant, but also savoury. A really well put together wine.

Monte del Frà has its headquarters in the heart of the Bianco di Custoza zone, to the east of Lake Garda and only 15 kilometres from the historic centre of Verona. The company was founded by brothers Eligio and Claudio Bonomo in 1958. Today, the estate is made up of over 100 hectares of land including, besides Monte del Frà itself, other holdings that take their names from the areas where they are situated, such as Ca' del Magro, Monte Godi,Mascarpine, Staffalo, Monte Fitti, Grottino and the splendid Lena di Mezzo domaine at Fumane in the heart of the Valpolicella Classico zone. There are also other vineyards that the family leases, all of which are in the finest districts for wine production in the Province of Verona. The Bonomo family's passion for winemaking was born in the countryside. Its members' firm conviction that great wine is created above all in the vineyard led totheir first radical choices being made right there in the fields: they increased the number of vines per hectare to between 4000 and 7000 - depending on the variety - and opted for using only Double Guyot and Cordon Spur as training systems.
