It is impossible to think in terms of Chianti with this single vineyard Riserva. Simply put, this wine is stunning in complexity and harmony, an outstanding value in comparison to mature Bordeaux. The bouquet of roasted berries, tobacco and violets has incredible focus and finesse, and the body is silky, super-concentrated and powerful. Already delicious, this wine will age effortlessly for at least a decade.
Gorgeous Chianti Classico riserva. Focused aromas of plum, dried cherries and berries. Full- to medium-bodied, with well-integrated tannins and a long, fruity finish. Very fine indeed. Drink now through 2003.
Pleasant, with plum, berry and hints of leather on the nose and palate. Medium-bodied, with light tannins and a fruity finish. Drink now.
Brilliant, light garnet-brick hue. Exotic, complex game and mineral aromas show a real note of terroir. A lean entry leads to a firm, drying, medium-bodied palate. Tightly wound, with ultra-traditional flavors. Very stylish. Try with mid-term cellaring.
Bright, medium-dark ruby. Pretty floral red cherry aroma with hints of tar and mushroom. More red cherry on the palate, reinforced by spicy tea leaf and woodsy nuances. Lively acids keep this pleasant, uncomplicated wine light on its feet. The peppery finish is tad short, though.
The 1998 Chianti Classico Il Poggio exhibits sweet black cherry liqueur notes intermixed with saddle leather and dried herbs. Medium-bodied, with good acidity, sweet tannin, and an austere personality, it will drink well for 7-10 years.
Here's a wine that showcases a nice evolution: Initial fruit aromas give way to toasted wood, vanilla and bramble. Overall, it shows a clean, linear quality, although it does end strong with oak notes; astringent but very persistent on the finish.
