Editorial Reviews for Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva
The last vintage aged exclusively in barrique, 50% of which were new, 50% second passage. The nose here is deep and gamy with sour tones, yet full of spicy backed black cherry notes. With air this gains a n herbal edge and a deep veal reduction tone that has an impression of sweetness. Rich on entry with plenty of glycerin and then rather dry tannins this offers a rather curious combination of very ripe fruits and unripe tannins with some more wood tannins tacked on at the end. Then fruit gains some black raspberry tones on the finish, which is tannic and tough, before ending on notes of leather and mint. I’m not sure this is going to actually improve in the cellar as the tannins seem much more durable than the fruit. 86pts

Add your reviewThe nose showed strawberry, floral stems, mint and dried cinnamon. On the palate, it was youthfully lean yet balanced, showing red berries and inner floral notes that lasted through the finish. The 2009 may need more time before it blossoms, and I’ll be happy to put some away to wait and see.
91 Points: Starts off with roasted (not stewed) black cherry, a coffee undertone, and savory dried herbs. On the palate there is dried black cherry, a little powdered cocoa on the mid palate, moderate acidity, and fine tannins. Finishes very nicely with a pleasant grip, lingering dried herbs, tobacco, and that subtle dusty cocoa note, all supported by understated acidity. Later, rose petals distinctly on the nose. Complex, balanced, and impressive at this age and price point.
D/H 2013-2023-The 2008 Chianti Classico Riserva is a very pretty, centered wine. Dark cherries, plums, spices, menthol, cedar, game and tobacco are some of the notes that emerge from the glass. The 2008 is an understated Riserva that impresses for its length, focus and balance. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023. Score: 92. —Antonio Galloni, August 2011. @dodds
The nose showed black cherries, mint, floral, a hint of barnyard and that lovely dusty note that Sangiovese sometimes shows. On the palate, it flowed effortlessly with juicy, ripe red fruits, some tobacco and cedar. The finish was long and fresh with just a hint of structure showing through. This is yet another great value wine from Monsanto. I repeatedly find the Monsanto Riserva to be everything I ever want from Chianti.
medium bodied and silky smooth. This tastes of cherries, raisins and rasberries

A powerful and opulent style, this red displays ripe cherry, black currant, violet and tobacco aromas and flavors. The tannins are gripping on the finish, which lingers with sweet fruit and mineral accents. Well-proportioned. Best from 2014 through 2021.
Deep red. A hint of game complements aromas of fresh flowers and spicy red cherry. Supple and sweet, with brisk acidity framing the dark fruit and licorice flavors. For such a fresh wine, this boasts impressive texture and breadth. Finishes with very good balance and lift.
The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva is striking. Succulent dark cherries, flowers, mint and licorice burst from the glass in this exuberant, sexy Riserva. The tannins are nearly buried by the opulent fruit, but the wine retains great balance, while avoiding any sense of heaviness. The 2009 captures the heat and richness of the year while never abandoning its classic sense of structure. This is a superb wine from Monsanto with plenty of upside potential. Sweet floral notes add an elegant, feminine touch to the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012–2021.
Bright red. Delicate aromas of redcurrant, blueberry and violet. Fresh and refined, with lovely purity and verve to the red cherry, redcurrant and floral flavors. Finishes with smooth tannins and great acid lift.

Monsantoandrsquo;s 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva is simply beautiful. The opulent, forward fruit that is typical of the year is present, but a firm sense of structure keeps things from going over the top. If that sounds appealing, believe me, it is. Dark red fruit, flowers, minerals and spices come together beautifully in this serious Riserva. A round, harmonious finish rounds things off in style. Readers will have a hard time doing better for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2010andndash;2017.
Winemaker's Notes:
The Chianti Classico Riserve comes from a selection of grapes from vineyards which are more suitable for long maturing. Vinified in steel with a maceration of about 20 days, and as a second passage, it is aged in smaller wooden barrels for about 18 months, to then rest for a minimum of 3 months in glass.
