The nose showed strawberry, floral stems, mint and dried cinnamon. On the palate, it was youthfully lean yet balanced, showing red berries and inner floral notes that lasted through the finish. The 2009 may need more time before it blossoms, and I’ll be happy to put some away to wait and see.

The nose was classic Monsanto Chianti, showing ripe strawberry, with hints of plum, barnyard, animal musk and a whiff chalky mineral. On the palate, it was silky with great balanced acidity lending juicy tones as concentrated red fruits and dried spices seduced the senses. The finish showed hints of refined tannin with tart fruit lingering through the close. As usual, this wine performs much better after an hour or two in decanter, lending a much better showing than any note I've taken at formal tastings. (91 points)

An outstanding Chianti, possessing aromas of clove, cherry and cedar. Soft, ripe tannins support sweet cherry and spice flavors. Long, slightly dry finish. Very drinkable in May 2013. An hour of decanting does a lot for this wine. At around $18 per bottle, this is a steal. Grade of A for quality, A for value.

"The 2005 Chianti Classico Riserva reveals a profile of red berries, herbs, crushed flowers and spices. The wine possesses an attractive up-front personality and finessed tannins."

The 2009 Chianti Classico Riserva is striking. Succulent dark cherries, flowers, mint and licorice burst from the glass in this exuberant, sexy Riserva. The tannins are nearly buried by the opulent fruit, but the wine retains great balance, while avoiding any sense of heaviness. The 2009 captures the heat and richness of the year while never abandoning its classic sense of structure. This is a superb wine from Monsanto with plenty of upside potential. Sweet floral notes add an elegant, feminine touch to the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2021. A powerful and opulent style, this red displays ripe cherry, black currant, violet and tobacco aromas and flavors. The tannins are gripping on the finish, which lingers with sweet fruit and mineral accents. Well-proportioned. Best from 2014 through 2021. 22,000 cases made. -BS - Wine Spectator Top 100, 2012 Deep red. A hint of game complements aromas of fresh flowers and spicy red cherry. My absolute favorite Chianti Classico year after year. Bigger and with a richer layer of spice than many Chiantis at this price point, the Monsanto is perfect for pasta dishes featuring sausage or heavy meats and tomato sauce. Food pairing: red meats, pasta Flavor type: traditional Body type: medium-full Finish: elegant

Deep red. A hint of game complements aromas of fresh flowers and spicy red cherry. Supple and sweet, with brisk acidity framing the dark fruit and licorice flavors. For such a fresh wine, this boasts impressive texture and breadth. Finishes with very good balance and lift.
