Castello di Monsanto is one of the most respected estates in Tuscany and one of the top producers of traditional Chianti Classico Riserva. Located midway between Florence & Siena, the estate lies on the westernmost edge of the Chianti Classico zone, one of the best areas for Chianti. The estate itself is a landmark, with its distinctive hilltop castle.
The nose showed black cherries, mint, floral, a hint of barnyard and that lovely dusty note that Sangiovese sometimes shows. On the palate, it flowed effortlessly with juicy, ripe red fruits, some tobacco and cedar. The finish was long and fresh with just a hint of structure showing through. This is yet another great value wine from Monsanto. I repeatedly find the Monsanto Riserva to be everything I ever want from Chianti.
Really nice Chianti, smooth, full bodied, great value. $17.95 VW

What works nicely here are the cherry, forest berry, charcoal, black licorice and plum aromas. Yoursquo;ll get candied cherry flavors in the mouth and dusty tannins although the wine lacks that extra dimension to boost it up to the excellent category.
The estatersquo;s mid-weight, silky-textured 2003 Chianti Classico Riserva presents attractive notes of super-ripe red fruits, grilled herbs and spices on an ample, yet classically built frame that captures the generous warmth of the vintage while maintaining a sense of freshness as well as restraint. Showing outstanding length on the palate, roundness from the oak, notable purity and terrific overall balance, it is a gorgeous wine to drink now and over the next decade or so. Anticipated maturity: 2007ndash;2017.
Medium-bodied with a light tint, this is a warm wine full of red-currant flavors and hefty tannins. The finish is long as can be, with a pronounced touch of interesting wood. Very tangy and lean, this may improve down the line. Now itrsquo;s a little closed and lean.
Deep medium red. Some new oak is immediately apparent on the nose, followed by delicate sweet raspberry and minty underbrush. More raspberry on the palate, with plump strawberry and red cherry fruit flavors adding complexity. Though not particularly persistent, there are enticing black pepper and tobacco echoes on the very smooth, suavely tannic finish.
A generous and modern wine with plush aromas of sweet vanilla, black cherry, ripe blueberry, spice and a healthy wallop of chocolate fudge that proves to be a true crowd pleaser. Beautiful in the glass, with brilliant ruby reflections, the wine is silky-smooth in the mouth with bright berries flavors that ride over a long, soft finish.
The 2005 Chianti Classico Riserva reveals a profile of red berries, herbs, crushed flowers and spices. The wine possesses an attractive up-front personality and finessed tannins, but it does taper off a bit on the mid-palate. In this rain-plagued vintage Monsanto did not produce its Riserva ll Poggio, and the best fruit from that site was added to this Riserva bottling, which was aged in a variety of used French oak barrels. Anticipated maturity: 2008ndash;2017.
Attractive plum and cedar aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, with light tannins and a fresh finish. A solid, traditional-style wine. Yummy. Drink now.
