The nose showed black cherries, mint, floral, a hint of barnyard and that lovely dusty note that Sangiovese sometimes shows. On the palate, it flowed effortlessly with juicy, ripe red fruits, some tobacco and cedar. The finish was long and fresh with just a hint of structure showing through. This is yet another great value wine from Monsanto. I repeatedly find the Monsanto Riserva to be everything I ever want from Chianti.

Monsanto's 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva is simply beautiful. The opulent, forward fruit that is typical of the year is present, but a firm sense of structure keeps things from going over the top. Light red. Dusty bitter red cherry, licorice and a hint of game on the slightly muted nose, along with a subtle hint of dried violet. Suave, pliant and sweet if not hugely complex, with slightly high-toned red berry and oak flavors leading to a ripe but firmly tannic finish. Iandrsquo;d decant this a couple of hours ahead.

Monsantoandrsquo;s 2007 Chianti Classico Riserva is simply beautiful. The opulent, forward fruit that is typical of the year is present, but a firm sense of structure keeps things from going over the top. If that sounds appealing, believe me, it is. Dark red fruit, flowers, minerals and spices come together beautifully in this serious Riserva. A round, harmonious finish rounds things off in style. Readers will have a hard time doing better for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2010andndash;2017.

WS 92 WA 90 Pts - Winemakers Notes - Made with grapes from a further selection, first in the vineyard and afterward in the winery, this Riserva consists of Sangiovese (90%) and Canaiolo and Colorino (10%). It has excellent potential for aging.

Full-bodied, rich, traditional-style Chianti with intense autumnal character of smoked almond, chestnut, fresh mushroom and ripe fruit. Medium- to full-bodied, with firm tannins and fresh acidity. Decant if drinking now. Best after 2000.

Medium-bodied with a light tint, this is a warm wine full of red-currant flavors and hefty tannins. The finish is long as can be, with a pronounced touch of interesting wood. Very tangy and lean, this may improve down the line. Now itrsquo;s a little closed and lean.
