What to Expect

Sangiovese's claim to fame is its role as the heart of Chianti, Brunello and many Super Tuscan wines though it is gaining ground as a varietal wine around the globe. When grown in a suitable location the grape's soft tannins, succulent acidity and moderately intense cherry and herb flavors make Sangiovese very easy to drink as well as supremely versatile at the dinner table.

Winemakers Notes

Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva is a 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo and Colorino blend aged for 24 months in oak plus 6 months in bottle creating a medium ruby color. It has a sweet scent with ripe, warm cherries and notes of dry earth and tobacco, and an elegant palate full of bright cherry and berry fruit, dry, ripe tannins and great acidity making it a perfect wine for food!

Editorial Reviews

Intensely aromatic with a floral and salame tones then burnished sour cherry/strawberry fruit, very floral, smells decidedly funky, leathery, and slightly sour with a touch of cigar ash smokiness. With air earth, oystershell, mint, spice, dried orange peel, old wet leather, soil, and even a hint of truffle emerge on this effusive and complex nose. A brilliant nose. Bright acids and a touch of fat up front yield to a nice layer of astringent tannins that coat the mouth with silky, smoky, dried strawberry fruit. This offers an array of flavors running from soil notes, black tea, maduro tobacco, read more...

Barnyard, violets and herbs, dark fruits, ripe black cherries, cedar, smoked meats, prosciutto, with nice balance of acidity and tannins. Midpalate of white pepper and medium to long finish.

Very expressive on the nose with cranberry, sandalwood, vanilla and sweet licorice. Followed by flavors of slightly tart cherries and a bit of a herbacious and barnyard aftertaste (in a good way). Great structure and nice long finish.

Winemaker Laura Bianchi makes an old world style Chianti Classico that is full on the palate and has lots of black fruit flavors.
