  The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. I thought it was over-rated for a reserve cab. I expected more. It wasn't offensive, but it wasn't particularly amazing, either, that it should have been granted any sort of reserve status. Here's to hoping the winemaker selects better lots for reserve in the future. D-{

Wow! Still drinking great in 2008. A beautiful rich, well made bottle of wine. Velvety on the palate with well balanced acidity and tannins. A mouthfull of black and red fruits with some tobacco and leather notes. Finish is long and smooth. Nose is robust and inviting.

Wonderfully rich, noble nose with hints of eucalyptus. Rich red and black berry fruit on the palate with some menthol. Lovely structure and mouthfeel. Great balance and in its sweet spot. Drinking very well presently. 97 pts. 5/26/12

Panicked when I first opened it, because it smelled like bandaids. That happily blew off almost immediately, revealing layers of cassis, pllum, spice, and smoothly integrated tannins. This was a classic Napa Cab, aged to perfection. It may have another year in it, but its beautifully drinkable now so I wouldn't wait.

This sample was a knockout at the blind tasting of 1987 Cabernet barrel samples. This is undoubtedly the finest Reserve since the 1974, perhaps even the 1970. The wine shows great richness, a fabulous nose of smoky oak and jammy blackcurrants. The flavors in the mouth are terrific as this wine has astounding depth, a hedonistic level of fruit, and a tremendous finish. This is the kind of wine that California can produce and is capable of winning the hearts and souls of the masses. Anticipated maturity: 1991ndash;2004.

Contains 67% To-Kalon Vineyard fruit. Still a baby. Closed, brooding, very deep, very dry. Fabulous cassis fruit, a huge wine. Lots of delicious, sweet new oak. Superbly balanced, impressive. Drinkable now, but best 2010ndash;2020.

The best Cabernet Irsquo;ve tasted in 35 years!

The stylish, elegant 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve (8,300 cases of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec) is not as dense as either the M-Bar or Vine Hill Ranch cuvee, but it offers a beautiful marriage of power and elegance. Cedar wood, creme de cassis, spice box, and dried herb aromas soar from the glass of this medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, elegant Private Reserve, which is somewhat reminiscent of Mondavirsquo;s 1978. Itrsquo;s all about harmony, balance, and finesse in 2002. Drink it over the next 15+ years.

Soft and succulent blackberry and cassis fruit upfront, framed by squeaky clean tannins and solid oak elements. This is most notable for its voluptuous, velvety texture, which coats the palate with sweet flavors. Itrsquo;s not a big wine but a balanced, harmonious one, and a success for the vintage.

Very tight nose, with blackberry, coffee and cocoa notes, this is a big wine that shows great intensity and depth. quite closed now, the dark profile keeps its cards close to the vest. One thing for sure: this is definitely one for the cellar. The finish is lengthy, with brisk tannins as well as espresso and bitter-chocolate notes. Hold for eight to ten years; this wine should keep rsquo;til 2020.

Deep, saturated red-ruby. Lively, complex aroma dominated by blackcurrant, licorice and tobacco. Sweet and quite deep but very tightly wrapped. much more difficult to taste than it was prior to bottling. finishes with tongue-saturating tannins. Very firmly structures; today, the winersquo;s acids and tannins have not yet harmonized. A drier, serious style of cabernet, in need of bottle aging.
