I thought it was over-rated for a reserve cab. I expected more. It wasn't offensive, but it wasn't particularly amazing, either, that it should have been granted any sort of reserve status. Here's to hoping the winemaker selects better lots for reserve in the future. D-{

Wow! Still drinking great in 2008. A beautiful rich, well made bottle of wine. Velvety on the palate with well balanced acidity and tannins. A mouthfull of black and red fruits with some tobacco and leather notes. Finish is long and smooth. Nose is robust and inviting.

Wonderfully rich, noble nose with hints of eucalyptus. Rich red and black berry fruit on the palate with some menthol. Lovely structure and mouthfeel. Great balance and in its sweet spot. Drinking very well presently. 97 pts. 5/26/12

Panicked when I first opened it, because it smelled like bandaids. That happily blew off almost immediately, revealing layers of cassis, pllum, spice, and smoothly integrated tannins. This was a classic Napa Cab, aged to perfection. It may have another year in it, but its beautifully drinkable now so I wouldn't wait.

Sleek, elegant and long on finesse, with a mature, supple tapestry of currant, plum and dried berry fruit. The chewy tannins firm up and give backbone to the finish. Drink now through 2007.

A sleek Napa Valley cabernet, this emphasizes riper fruit, in the wild blueberry and blackberry mode, than Mondavirsquo;s rsquo;04 Reserve. The smooth tannins have a resinous edge, suited to hanger steak.

Seductive and stylish up front, with pretty, supple, coffee, currant, anise and sage notes, but you keep hoping for a little more focus. Finishes with a thick, chewy wall of dry tannins. Best from 2002 through 2008.

The finest Private Reserve since the 1991, 1990, and 1987, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve is extraordinary. There are 8,000 cases of the blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc, and small dollops of Merlot as well as Petit Verdot. A perfume of smoke, camphor, creme de cassis, cedar, and fruitcake is accompanied by a gentle giant of a wine. Powerful and impeccably balanced, with outstanding concentration, well-integrated wood, acidity, and tannin, and a long, nearly 60-second finish, this saturated ruby-purple-hued effort is a prodigious example of Cabernet Sauvignon. Anticipated maturity: nowndash;2020+.

There are approximately 60,000 cases of Mondavirsquo;s 1999 Chardonnay. If one wants to offer a model of restraint and European-like elegance in a Napa wine, this is not a bad effort. Refreshing, with good pear and tropical fruit presented in a medium-bodied, subtle style, the wine is clean, pure, and attractive, but how many people will be excited? Anticipated maturity: nowndash;2004.

A brilliant effort from Mondavi, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve (a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and the rest Malbec and Petit Verdot) exhibits complex aromatics of forest floor, sweet black cherry and black currant fruit, vanillin and lead pencil shavings. Dense and powerful as well as elegant and concentrated, the finish reveals moderate tannins, and the wine needs another 4ndash;5 years of cellaring, but it has at least 25 years of upside left.

Full-bodied, with ripe, integrated tannins enlivened by excellent acidity. Harmonious layers of ripe black plum and blackberry fruit flavors with a hint of spice and taffy-toasted oak.
