Mondavi Coastal Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

Winemaker's Notes:

90 points Wine Enthusiast: What's so nice about this wine is that it has full-throttle Chard personality while keeping everything so balanced that it's also a versatile food wine. You can't say that about a lot of Chardonnays. Mainly it's the acidity, but also the complex, subtle interplay of fruit and oak. A very nice job. (Sep 2007)

The Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 after a family split with the Charles Krug Winery, which had been founded by Robert’s father.  After heading out on his own, Robert settled on land in Napa valley, and in particular the famed To Kalon Vineyard in the Rutherford district. The original plot in To Kalon Vineyard was only 12 acres, but today there are 450 acres under vine. The Robert Mondavi Winery also includes the Wappo Hill Vineyard, which is a 400 acre plot in the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley. Within a year of its inception, the Robert Mondavi Winery proved to be a true pioneer, not only with the establishment of his winery but also by introducing and popularizing the use of French oak barrels for wine, European wine techniques, and the bottling of varietal wines. Robert Mondavi Winery only uses French Oak barrels for storing wine, and his influence and success led to the practice’s prevalence. Among Mondavi’s greatest successes one would have to count the creation of the Fume Blanc moniker for Sauvignon Blanc as well as the introduction of his benchmark Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet. Today Robert Mondavi’s legacy is carried on under the watchful eye of his wife who works with the current winemakers Genevieve Janssens, Gustavo Gonzalez, and Richard Arnold to ensure that today’s Robert Mondavi wines deliver the elegance, appeal, and character that Robert had intended. I had this wine at Maggiano's in Philly on a recommendation and I thought it was wonderful. I'm normally not a fan of really full-bodied wines, but this had a great taste to it, a wonderful aroma, and went very well with my lasagna.

Earthy and deep with black fruit aromas. Palate is full bodied with loads of ripe fruit, some nice spice and warm tannins.

A crowd pleaser. This wine doesn't try to do any fancy tricks but is very enjoyable. Tannins are pretty well balanced now, so I'm not sure how this wine would stand up to aging.

Deep clear red/purple in color. Excellent nose (Lush fruit with hints of chocolate). Sits calmly on the palette and tastes of chocolate, cassias, and balanced tannins with a smooth finish

Outstanding! One of the best wines I've tried. Smooth, velvety, lingures and warms. Great aromas, you can taste the berries and spices. Just a great, great wine.

A sleek Napa Valley cabernet, this emphasizes riper fruit, in the wild blueberry and blackberry mode, than Mondavi’s ’04 Reserve. The smooth tannins have a resinous edge, suited to hanger steak.

Firm, rich and supple, with a focused core of cherry, currant, anise, sage and cedar, and the oak in the background. The finish turns firm and mildly tannic. Best after 2000 through 2006.

This is a very fine, high level Cabernet that shows the impeccable nature of Mondavi Reserve. Yet it’s also very tannic and far from being drinkable. Shows a vast repository of black currant, blackberry, black cherry and new oak flavors wrapped into a smooth, velvety mouthfeel whose finish goes on forever. Masculine and authoritative, it should continue to improve for many years. Drink now, with decanting, and through 2017, at least.

Darker and riper than Mondavi's Napa Cabernet, with the blackberries veering into currants, and the oak seems to be newer and smokier, too. Quite dramatic, in the tension of its fruit, oak, acids and tannins. Young and flashy, and will easily age through 2015.

The best Cabernet I've tasted in 35 years!

The full-bodied, powerful, pure 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is another outstanding effort revealing notes of spring flowers, toasty oak, creme de cassis, licorice, and graphite. One would have to go back to the 1990, 1991, 2001, or 2002 to find a Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve this impressive. The 2007 should evolve for 20ndash;25 years.

Tasting Notes:

An inky wine that follows through on the promise of its deep, dark color to deliver intensity in every way. In the nose, ripe aromas of wild blueberry merge with a hint of black olive and notes of spice and vanilla derived from aging in new French oak. In the mouth, the powerful tannins are chewy and generous, and beautifully balanced by the wine’s equally dense flavors of black fruits—blackberry, black cherry, boysenberry and crème de cassis. Vibrant and alive with fresh acidity, the 2005 Reserve is a powerful wine that carries its considerable muscle with elegance and style Deep, dark color signals the wine’s intensity. Aromas of wild blueberry contain hints of black olive and spicy vanilla from oak aging. Dense flavors of blackberry, black cherry and boysenberry are enhanced by elegantly powerful tannins and vibrant acidity

You can't say that about a lot of Chardonnays. Mainly it's the acidity, but also the complex, subtle interplay of fruit and oak. A very nice job. (Sep 2007)
