- (from a bottle with 2 1/2 inches of ullage; shipper was J. Vandermeullen-Décannière of Belgium). Bricked through to a deep ruby center. Cofee, mocha and an abundance of ripe earth and leather lead to rich if not powerful flavors of lovely complexity, all underpinned by prominent tannins and fine length. This is ripe to the point of surmaturité and while it is delicious, it is somewhat peculiar in style. This should be drunk now as the tannins will clearly outlast the remaining fruit. 88/now Note: From another recent bottle where the shipper was also J. Vandermeullen-Décannière. Approximately read more...2 of ullage. Quite dark, in fact almost syrah-like that is inconsistent with what one typically finds in the vast majority of '55s today. The nose offers distinct volative acidity and flavors are reminiscent of tar, leather and game and while they are very rich, indeed almost thick, they bear little resemblance to classic aged pinot aromas and flavors. Not for me. 82/now (hide)
