KARMÈRE VINEYARDS AND WINERY OF SHENANDOAH VALLEY is a result of five generations of farming and a love of the land and rural life. Marilyn K Hoopes, co-founder of Karmère, grew up in Teton Valley, Idaho on a potato farm on the Teton river in full view of the Grand Tetons. In l978, at age twenty-six, she moved to Amador County and fell in love with the bucolic Shenandoah Valley. She also fell in love with Todd Pickens who had recently moved from the Bay area and prior from L.A. to Amador County to become a "back to the lander." They made their home in Jackson, California and in l990 bought their first piece of property in Shenandoah Valley: a seventeen acre parcel adjacent to Terre Rouge. This is their home place. In l994, they completed an IRS 1031 real property trade and obtained the eighty-nine acre Jameson Ranch where the winery and tasting facility now exists. The name "Karmère" (car-mare) is in honor of Marilyn's mother Karma Hoopes: "mère" is the French word for mother. Since the land exchanged came from Marilyn's parent's estate and the existing farm in Idaho bears her father's name, Marilyn decided to honor her mother's hard work and vision and thus the name was created. Marilyn, an attorney, and Todd, an optometrist, are the parents of three grown children, Josh, Jared, and Hayley. All of the children are involved in the winery or vineyards. Todd continues to practice optometry and Marilyn works as a part-time Administrative Law Judge devoting the majority of her time to the winery and vineyards. The first Zinfandel vines were planted in l994. Plantings of zin, syrah, barbera, viognier, primitivo and nebbiolo have continued with sixty-seven acres planted of the hundred and five total. Good champagne from Moet & Chandon. We certainly like this one more than the oh-so-en-vogue Veuve Clicquot, but less than the M & C Nectar Imperial

Vivid gold with a strong bead. Lemon meringue, cherry pit and smoky minerals on the nose, along with a suave, nutty undertone. Fleshy citrus and orchard fruit flavors are firmed by a bitter fruit skin quality and sweetened by floral honey. Less rich than I would expect from this vintage, with good finishing lift and cling.

A new Champagne release from the Moët Champagne House. Surely to be another hit among Moët fans.

A rich, opulent style, offering peach, apricot and ginger flavors. Full-bodied and muscular, yet with a firm structure keeping it all focused and a nice tangy finish. Drink now through 2018.

Moët’s vintage, from the hot, low-yielding 2003 vintage, has an unusually high percentage of Pinot Meunier (43%), suggesting there is a distinct character to the year. It’s certainly powerful and intense, soft initially, hinting at toast and yeast, the fruit almost sweet, even though the wine is a brut style. It is the rich strawberry flavor that’s most surprising on a wine that really has integrated impressively.

The estate’s 2003 Grand Vintage offers attractive notes of honey, smoke, apricots in a full-bodied, generous personality. There is good length, yet slightly bitter tannins on the finish detract from the wine’s overall balance. Anticipated maturity: 2008–2013.

With its high percentage of Champagne’s third grape, Pinot Meunier, as a result of the growing conditions of 2003, this is a great wine that is developing fast. It has more toast, less fruit, although its richness and weight are finely in balance with a yeasty cookie dough character.
