Moët & Chandon Champagne Blend Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon Rosé 1998

Winemaker's Notes:

On the nose: The first perfumed floral notes ckly open up into orange peel and dried fruits, with the characteristics of a well-matured harvest and woody spices. On the palate: The envelope is ample and the structure remarkably balanced, precise and sophisticated. The warm, radiant complexity persists and vibrates, barely touched by the subtlest hint of bitterness.

Moet & Chandon is one of the most well-known luxury champagne producers in the word. With over 2,500 acres of vineyards and an annual champagne production of 26,000,000 bottles, Moet & Chandon lives, breathes, and, of course, drinks champagne. The House of Moet was founded in 1743 by Claude Moet, but it wasn’t until his grandson, Jean-Remy Moet, took over that the company really took off and became an international luxury brand. Jean-Remy Moet strove to bring the pleasure of champagne to everyone he could, forming partnerships with both French and international clients on a regular basis. When Jean-Remy Moet sold the House of Moet to his son Victor Moet and his son-in-law Pierre-Gabriel Chandon in 1833, the ensuing partnership formed Moet & Chandon. Shortly after the new branding, in 1842, Moet & Chandon released its first vintage champagne, leading the way to even higher-quality champagne. In 1921, they produced their first prestige cuvée under the brand Dom Pérignon, named after a Benedictine monk who was an important pioneer for champagne. The first vintage released for sale was in 1936, and today it is managed by winemaker Richard Geoffroy. Read less

Color. Coppery pink with light orange highlights. On the nose. The aroma of malt rapidly leads into that of well-ripened fruit, nectarine and wild strawberries, complemented by smoky, peaty accents. On the palate. In a paradox that typifies the vintage, concentration and movement vie each other with an affirmation of boldness and authority. The tastes progress with strength - tense, radiant and sharp. The finish is firm, underscored with a slightly vanilla-spicy note. The 1996 harvest. The year was full of contrasts. The summer weather was capricious and the wet periods did not compensate for the early lack of rain. In the end, it was the periods of high heat in the months preceding the harvest (the start of which was spread from September 16 to October 1) that led to the exceptional maturity of the harvest, marked by a rare balance of power and acidity.

A rare gift for those with distinguished taste. This graceful selection displays the perfect combination of elegance and flair found only in the most marvelous Champagnes. An intensely flavored Champagne displaying tropical fruit, berry and citrus aromas, it is highly treasured for its taste and much sought after for its very limited production and rarity.

The 1998 Dom Perignon Rose is a striking, intensely perfumed wine redolent of sweet candied cherries and spices. This medium-bodied wine possesses gorgeous structure, and ideally another year or two of cellaring is warranted in order for the full range of aromas and flavors to emerge. The Dom Perignon Rose is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir, with most of the Pinot coming from the south-facing vineyards of Ay. Anticipated maturity 2010-2020.

Dom Perignon makes an unparalleled Rosé Champagne and the 1998 vintage is no exception. The house style of Dom P leaves its clear mark on the wine, resulting in a fine balance between the clean, orchard fruit of Chardonnay and the earthy, almost woodsy quality of Pinot Noir. On the nose, notice floral notes mingling with a sensation of dried red berries such as stawberries and cherries. On the palate, Dom P's Rosé is quite delicate in style, earthy, red fruits giving way to chalky minerality on the finish. A complex and lingering Rosé Champagne that deserves the praise it consistently garners.
