AWE blind tasting - cedary, sweet sassafras notes, lighter nose with a fleshy, muddy medicinal tone, lots of licorice and bitter root tones, big and fairly powerful with a nice deep core of fruit, tannins are a bit finer grained than many though still a touch aggressive, nice peachy tone to the fruit, finishes with the tannins really grabbing hold but there is nice purity to the fruit here, not terribly expressive but intriguing, with a real nice bitter cherry tone on the finish 88-89

A bit reduced on the nose though very cedary with notes of tea and tobacco. Bright and fruity on entry then turning a bit dry and austere across the mid-palate with nice fruit but plenty of wood tannin that comes to dominate the finish. Needs time for the tannin to soften but the wine seems nice if a touch simple. 86pts

tasted on 3 occasions; greatly enjoyed each. Substantial tanins, great balance of oak, earth, truffle, chocolate and dark fruits.

Good medium red. Currant, plum, smoke and truffle on the nose, plus a whiff of minerality. Sweet on entry, then drier and less silky in the middle than the Basarin but with very good breadth and a light touch. Most impressive today on the subtle, broad back end, which offers lovely spicy/herbal lift. This elegantly styled wine from clay and chalk soil needs time in bottle.

The 2010 Barbaresco Bric Balin is my favorite wine of the year. It’s a full-throttle Barbaresco with full servings of black fruit, spice, leather, tar, tobacco and licorice. The wine oozes darkness and richness, but then surprises you with a playful touch of sweet cherry on the finish. The structure and intensity are so big right now, you really need to give this wine more time. Anticipated maturity: 2017–2027.

This medium-bodied wine has notes of licorice, black fruits and tobacco meshed with a lovely long finish.

This truly exceptional estate is owned by brothers Franco and Sergio Minuto, and their vineyards cover 27 acres in the communes of Barbaresco and Neive. What distinguishes Moccagatta is not just the superb quality of fruit, but the seductive polish of their wines. Matured in barrique, of which half were new, Bric Balin has profound richness along with a velvety texture. Th 2004 is a great vintage of this wine and has been rated "93" by the Spectator and "92" by Mr. Parker.

Amazing aromas of crushed berries, peach and flowers follow through to a full-bodied palate, with ultrafine tannins and a long, long finish. Has a bit of new oak, but this shows wonderful promise.
