I am one for unusual pairings... that being said, I decided to break with tradition and before dining, I had this wine with some fresh, ripe cherries that I just happened to have on hand. Wow! Not only did they compliment the Sangio, but it brought the flavor out of the fruit. (Don't ask me how.. think strawberries and champagne) The wine was light enough to not overpower and still had enough fruit to light up my nose. We will be keeping this one around.

Colored an intense, ruby red with garnet reflections, the Rosso di Montalcino has a finely intense nose with fragrant aromas of small, fresh fruits. On the palate it is delicately dry with aromatic, long-lasting flavors.

Mocali’s 2012 Rosso di Montalcino is powerful, intense and appealing. The wilder side of Sangiovese comes through in a Rosso laced with sweet tobacco, underbrush, game, cedar and dark cherries. Firm tannins will help the Rosso age nicely, but I would prefer to enjoy the 2012 young, before the gamy elements become too pronounced. This hearty Rosso is a pretty wine that is best enjoyed at the dinner table.

Earthy, almost funky aromas of game, truffle and black fruit lead the nose on this structured wine. The dense palate delivers juicy black plum and crushed raspberry accented with mocha and vanilla. Ripe, soft and round, it’s made to be enjoyed young.

Mocali’s 2012 Rosso di Montalcino is my favorite Rosso of the year and a highly recommend value wine. The wine is seductive and irresistible thanks to fullness of the fruit it offers in such a confident, almost cocky manner. This is a wine that knows what it wants to accomplish: It makes good on its promise to deliver a genuine, no-fuss drinking experience without the grand expectations of a Brunello di Montalcino. The architecture here is modern with big lines and chunky cherry endnotes. But it also makes rooms for the subtleties of menthol, licorice and balsam herb. Drink: 2014–2020.
