Tuscany, ItalyMocali Brunello di Montalcino is a beautiful red wine gem from the acclaimed 2007 Brunello vintage, scoring a 91-point rating from James Suckling and 90 points from Antonio Galloni for Parker's Wine Advocate! Considered the king of Tuscan wines and one of the most renowned and long-lived red wines of Italy, Brunello is produced from a specific strain of Sangiovese (Sangiovese Grosso) grown in the unique microclimate surrounding the Tuscan town of Montalcino. The Mocali estate, acquired by the Ciacci family (distant relations to Ciacci Piccolomini) in the 1950s, is a setting of natural Tuscan beauty where vineyards and olive groves alternate with oak and pine forests. Situated to the southwest of Montalcino at an altitude of 300-350 meters above sea-level on the slopes facing Castiglione del Bosco, the Mocali estate is comprised of 32 hectares, 6 of which are specialized vineyards (5 hectares of Sangiovese grosso), and 4 dedicated to olive groves.Mocali Brunello di Montalcino is intense ruby red in color, full in body with firm tannins and ripe fruit. This Brunello has a complex and balanced nose, showing aromas of raspberries and licorice with notes of chocolate and spice, varying from vanilla to cinnamon to coffee. Warm and full on the palate, the flavors are beautifully pronounced with excellent length. Made of 100% Sangiovese, the wine was aged for three years in large Slovenian oak casks. Well balanced to enjoy over the next 12-15 years as it improves with cellaring. Rich, long and complex on the finish.Enjoy Mocali Brunello di Montalcino with osso bucco, lasagna, eggplant Parmesan, and cheeses.

The Mocali Brunello 2004 is a very fine example of an outstanding vintage- and at this price, so far below its peers- it is not to be missed! The aroma is so very pure, fresh and inviting. In the mouth, the wine offers beautiful fruit qualities enhanced by aging in large Slovenian casks. The wine is very expressive and very long even at this early stage, with very fine-grained tannins in a superbly elegant finale. You can put this Bruello away in your cellar if you want, but it is absolutely delicious right now!

Mocali's 2001 Brunello di Montalcino is a refined, elegant effort with layers of vibrant, plump cherry fruit, tobacco, menthol, underbrush and minerals. Though medium in body it shows excellent concentration and juiciness on the palate, with notable length, fine tannins and a long finish. With some air it put on considerable weight and I preferred its overall balance to that of the single-vineyard Raunate. A few years of bottle age will help smooth the youthful tannins, but this Brunello is pretty tasty right now. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2019.

Winemaker's Notes:

In the winery the Mocali blends the use of traditional, large Slavonian oak barrels and French barrique to mature the wines for 2 years. The results are rich, dark and textured Brunellos that drink particularly well in their youth and continue to age gracefully for years.
