Mitolo Shiraz Savitar 2003
94-97 points Robert Parker: The 2003 Shiraz Savitar is a prodigious offering. Made from 30- to 50-year-old Shiraz vines in the Willunga district of McLaren Vale, it was aged 18 months in 100% new French barrels and small foudres. This elegant Shiraz boasts an opaque purple color along with sumptuous blueberry, blackberry, and cassis notes intermixed with touches of white flowers, licorice, camphor, and graphite. A compellingly textured, rich, super-endowed red, it combines power with finesse. (Oct 2004)

Named after a mythical monster, the 2005 Shiraz Savitar emerges from rocky, low vigor soils, and was aged for 16 months in primarily new French oak barrels. Dazzling aromas of acacia flowers, blueberries, crushed rocks, graphite, licorice, and espresso roast emerge from this tightly knit but intense, fleshy, rich effort. Its multilayered palate, huge body, sweet tannin, and "monster" finish suggest this brilliant wine will be drinkable between 2008 and 2020. It is a superb example of McLaren Vale Shiraz.
Bordering on perfection is the 2004 Shiraz Savitar. Made from 30- to 50-year-old vines, and aged 18 months in 100% new French hogsheads as well as smaller barriques, it boasts an opaque purple color, and an extraordinary nose of acacia flowers, blueberries, raspberries, and blacker fruits, melted licorice, and graphite. It possesses amazing intensity, great equilibrium, a fabulous, multi-layered mid-palate, and a blockbuster finish. This extraordinary Shiraz should prove to be one of the legends of southern Australia's great 2004 vintage. Drink it over the next 12-15 years.
The saturated blue/purple-colored 2002 Shiraz Savitar offers gorgeous aromas of white flowers, liquid minerals, blackberries, blueberries, earth, and tree bark. Ripe and full-bodied, with great intensity, this prodigious effort will require 2-3 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018. Barrel samples of three 2002s revealed tremendous potential in what appears to be the finest efforts Mitolo has yet produced. There are 300-400 cases of each, and all three are scheduled to be bottled in October. Kudos to young importer (31 years old!) Ben Hammerschlag for unearthing these potential superstars.
