Pretty intense on the nose with a classic array of grilled meat, pepper, spice, blackberry and plum, with a touch of a coffee top note. Just a bit thick on the palate, yet showing both density and freshness. This is a touch sweet with rich blackberry flavors that are a touch jammy, backed up by notes of grilled beef, pepper, vanilla and some nice astringent apple peel notes. The finish is a bit short, though brisk and clean, with attractive floral and plummy inner mouth aromatics and a long spice/cocoa note on the finale. Quintessential Shiraz. 92 pts

Deep blackberry fruit flavors, lots of cedar, brown sugar, and syrupy sweet aromas. Zesty acidity, black pepper, chewy tannins and a thick tar and dark chocolate finish. Very nice!

For me this is an avalanche of sweet fruit, and is a little unbalanced.. I am not getting the Aussie Shiraz 'peppery bite' at the end that gives it a needed touch of complexity. Have got a half case of this after having it at Viraswamy with a buffet Asian lunch where it seemed excellent. Am going to save it for well spiced meals where I think it will drink really well.

Medium-weighted aromas of stewed fruit and Bing cherry offer a perfect interplay with notes of smoke and bacon. Complex and enticing, the bouquet maintains its mixture of fruit and spicy, savoury notes at it opens up. The forward and fruity palate ha... Chuck Hayward. A savory style, offering toasty mineral and licorice flavors that wrap tightly around dark berry at the core, finishing lithe and focused.

Bright purple. Lively aromas of blackberry, cassis and spices. Spicy, bright and very fruity, with good energy to its dark berry flavors. This is far from a stereotypical Aussie shiraz. Finishes with smooth, gentle tannins and lingering spiciness. Offers considerable upfront appeal.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2009 Jester Shiraz has notes of kirsch, warm blackberries and baking spices with hints of vanilla, anise and tree bark. Full-bodied and with plenty of spicy fruit, it has a medium level of velvety tannins, crisp acid and a long finish. Drinking now, it should keep to 2016+.

Winemaker's Notes:

Mitolo Wines is a family owned winery, established in 1999 by Frank Mitolo. Mitolo`s vision is to create individual, handcrafted premium wines built on passion and an uncompromising commitment to quality. Winemaker, Ben Glaetzer became a partner in the business in 2001. The fusion of Frank`s intimate knowledge of the land and business acumen and Ben`s winemaking talent, has resulted in the creation of unique wines. The 2007 Mitolo Jester Shiraz is deep cherry red in colour, and shows bright, vibrant, rich fruit. On the nose it has an abundance of blue and black berries, with mocha and a hint of spice. On the palate, the ripe tannins support the fruit through to a long velvety finish. This wine was awarded a Silver Medal at the 2009 International Wine Challenge and a Shortlist at the 2009 Sommelier Wine Awards. The grapes for this wine come from the Willunga district of McLaren Vale, where there are heavy grey loam soils over sandstone, intermixed with black Biscay clay. These soils, combined with the maritime climate, contribute to an even ripening period and the development of rich fruit flavours and ripe tannins. Yields are around 4 tonnes an acre.
