What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Winemakers Notes

Each parcel of fruit for Jester is fermented on skins for 5 to 6 days at a cool temperature to enhance the pure berry fruit. The wine is then pressed and undergoes partial barrel fermentation. A natural malolactic fermentation is completed before the wine is racked. Aged in 2-4 year old French oak for 9 months. Dense purple colour and an almost black appearance, dark chocolate, anise and allspice dominate the nose, supported by hints of French oak, cherries and coffee. A fresh and juicy mid-palate shrouds tannin and length. The wine has flavours of fresh cut plums and licorice with hints of blackberry read more...

An excellent shiraz for a guy who hasn't gotten into shiraz simply because it tends to be so overblown. This bad boy is overblown, but it also balances a sense of earth/terroir. And it's BIG. I also think I've found another reason I'm not sold yet on shiraz - the ones I've had, including this excellent selection - are pretty one-dimensional. Like a Petite Sirah. Blockbuster yes. Depth? Not really. For those who love shiraz, this should be on your list .. Doubt I paid $60 for it at K&L Wines in San Francisco though! At least I hope not! I can buy Burgundy for that. An animated and bright nose showing flashes of black pepper and stone fruits. Rich and full bodied on the palate with flavours of blackcurrant, anise and mixed spice. The palate is multilayered and finishes with supple tannin.
