What to Expect

Australia has certainly made Syrah its own, even bestowing it with a new name: Shiraz. In the warm, dry climate of Australia this noble grape, responsible for some of the grandest wines of France, produces an intense, unique expression that is distinctly Australian. The ripe grapes take on classic notes of black pepper and leather that add depth and complexity to the black cherry and plum fruits on the palate. Australian Shiraz has typically been aged in American Oak barrels which impart the wine with a distinct note of vanilla that can add to the impression of ripeness many of these wines have, but the time in barrel also allows the wines a chance to settle and reveal their rich, voluptuously styled mouthfeel.

Reviews

Rating: 92/100 - As reviewed by International Wine Cellar in Issue 115, July/August 2004 ($50) Full ruby-red. Gamey, Northern Rhone -like aromas of roasted currant, violet, gunflint, minerals, bitter chocolate and licorice, with an overlay of sexy French oak. Concentrated, juicy and penetrating, with saline flavors of tangy black fruits and licorice. Wonderfully sappy wine with terrific inner-mouth energy. Finishes long and firmly tannic but not at all hard or dry. I like this style. (Epicurean Wines, Seattle WA)

"97,Wine AdvocateProduced from 26-year old vines and aged in French oak (80% new), the 2002 Shiraz G. A. M. reveals tremendous fruit purity, but it does not yet reveal secondary nuances. The inky blue/purple color is accompanied by aromas of ink, camphor, graphite, blackberries, and blueberries. While it possesses tremendous purity as well as an enormous full-bodied texture, it is neither heavy nor overbearing. This stunning Shiraz may be even better than the 2002 Savitar. Time will tell. The 2002 Shiraz The Jester is an exuberant, fun-styled effort. Aged in a combination of neutral French and American oak, it exhibits exemplary ripeness, tremendous fruit, loads of blackberry and cassis characteristics, a hint of licorice, and subtle wood and earth in the background. A fruit-forward Shiraz, it is meant to be consumed over the next 3-4 years. -Wine Advocate Richard Tarlton was favourite among jesters to Queen Elizabeth I. Tarlton was the first to achieve national celebrity as a comedian and enjoyed a successful career in theatre as a leading member of the Queen's Players. read more...

"96,Wine AdvocateThe saturated blue/purple-colored 2002 Shiraz Savitar offers gorgeous aromas of white flowers, liquid minerals, blackberries, blueberries, earth, and tree bark. Ripe and full-bodied, with great intensity, this prodigious effort will require 2-3 years of cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2018. Barrel samples of three 2002s revealed tremendous potential in what appears to be the finest efforts Mitolo has yet produced. There are 300-400 cases "
