External Reviews for Mitolo Shiraz G.A.M
The 2000 Shiraz G.A.M. (400 cases) offers an impressive dark ruby color as well as sweet aromas of red and black fruits intermixed with high class French oak. It possesses outstanding ripeness, a certain elegance and restraint, yet authoritative flavors. Medium to full-bodied, with beautifully integrated acidity, tannin, alcohol, and wood, it will drink well for a decade.
The formidable 2001 Shiraz G.A.M. exhibits a saturated purple color in addition to classic aromas of French oak intermixed with blackberry liqueur, pepper, and spice. Full-bodied, rich, and intense with admirable balance, elegance, and overall harmony, this French-styled, complex, nuanced Shiraz will drink well for 12-15 years. This new winery is a partnership of Ben Glaetzer and Frank Mitolo. According to the importer, no expense will be spared in producing these wines from this McLaren Vale Shiraz vineyard. One hundred percent new French oak is utilized. These are both imposing newcomers to Australia's high quality wine sweepstakes.
Produced from 26-year old vines and aged in French oak (80% new), the 2002 Shiraz G.A.M. reveals tremendous fruit purity, but it does not yet reveal secondary nuances. The inky blue/purple color is accompanied by aromas of ink, camphor, graphite, blackberries, and blueberries. While it possesses tremendous purity as well as an enormous full-bodied texture, it is neither heavy nor overbearing. This stunning Shiraz may be even better than the 2002 Savitar. Time will tell. Barrel samples of three 2002s revealed tremendous potential in what appears to be the finest efforts Mitolo has yet produced. There are 300-400 cases of each, and all three are scheduled to be bottled in October. Kudos to young importer (31 years old!) Ben Hammerschlag for unearthing these potential superstars.
Fashioned from a McLaren Vale vineyard, the 2005 Shiraz G.A.M. (named after the Mitolo children - Gemma, Alexander, and Marco) is a deep ruby/purple-hued effort displaying beautiful blackberry, white pepper, licorice, and toasty oak notes. Rich, full-bodied, and intense, with blueberry and blackberry flavors, sweet tannin, and excellent purity, it is a tour de force in winemaking. Enjoy it over the next decade.
Aged 18 months in primarily French oak, the 2004 Shiraz G.A.M. is an exceptional example of a precise yet full-flavored, concentrated Shiraz. Its gorgeous perfume of blueberries, blackberries, camphor, licorice, and pain grille is followed by an inky/blue/purple-colored wine offering superb purity, full-bodied richness, and gorgeous depth as well as texture. This fabulous effort is another example of Ben Glaetzer's brilliant talents. It should drink well for 15 years.
Full-bodied and lush, this hedonistic Shiraz easily hides its elevated alcohol level (15%) behind layers of concentrated plummy fruit. Hints of coffee, herbs and spices impart complexity, so this isn't a simple fruit bomb. Long and focused on the finish, with well-concealed structure that keeps the fruit from becoming jammy. Drink now-2015.
The spectacular, dense ruby/purple-colored 2003 Shiraz G. A. M. (named after the Mitolo family's three children) exhibits aromas of lead pencil shavings, blackberries, blueberries, cassis, licorice, new oak, and scorched earth. This complex 2003 comes across as a hypothetical blend of a great La Mission-Haut-Brion from Bordeaux and a Rhone Valley Hermitage such as Chapoutier's Pavillon. Everything is seamlessly integrated into this tour de force in winemaking. It should age for 10-15+ years.
G.A.M. Shiraz má jasnou rubínovou barvu, téměž až fialovou. Ve vůni vyniká především anýz, muškátový oříšek a černé bobulovité ovoce, lehce doplněné mletým pepřem a směsí ostatního koření. Hutná plná chuť překypuje ovocnou svěžestí a bohatostí. Název tohoto vína vznikl odvozením 1. písmene ve jménech Mitolových tří dětí: Gemma, Alex a Marco. Víno zrálo 18 měsíců ze 70 % v nových dubových sudech a ze 30 % v podruhé použitých sudech. Toto víno ...
