Mirassou Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc California 2008

Winemaker's Notes:

2008 Mirassou California Sauvignon Blanc Balancing intense fruit flavors with delicate aromas, Mirassou wines embody the optimism and pioneering spirit passed down through six generations of the Mirassou family. Featuring a bright, uniquely approachable style, these wines honor the Mirassou family’s heritage while appealing to a new generation of wine enthusiasts. Viticulture Notes California producers had a very challenging 2008 harvest as they were hit with frost, heat, drought, and wind all in one season. However, most producers were able to overcome these trials to produce a crop that was smaller than usual, but of very high quality. The early growing season was characterized by very dry weather and then frost hit in the spring, which was the worst frost reported in decades. As the vines were blooming in May, an early heat wave in many regions caused the vines to set a smaller crop than normal. The summer months were fairly moderate and warm, with an early harvest beginning in August. Another heat wave hit in early September which increased sugar levels rather quickly and left winemakers frantically rushing to pick the ripening grapes. Cooler weather came in late September and slowed harvest, which was completed in most regions by the end of October. Overall, the crop was smaller this year from the previous 2007 harvest, but the fruit was balanced and the quality remained high. Winemaking Notes The grapes that went into making the 2008 Mirassou Sauvignon Blanc were sourced from a number of California’s premier wine-growing regions, including Northern Sonoma and the Central Coast. The grapes were harvested during the night and early in the morning in order to keep the fruit cool to preserve the delicate aromas and flavors. At the winery, they were whole cluster pressed to minimize harsh phenolics. The juice was settled before racking to the fermenter which results in a cleaner fermentation and more elegant mouthfeel. The must was fermented in stainless steel tanks for approximately 14-21 days at 60 - 62° F. After fermentation, it was racked for settling and blending. The wine was aged in the bottle for two months prior to release. Taste Profile Displaying a soft mouthfeel and crisp flavors of tropical fruit and melon balanced with hints of grapefruit and pear, our Mirassou California Sauvignon Blanc is a bright expression of California’s most celebrated growing regions. Finished Wine Appellation: California Alcohol Content: 12.94% Residual Sugar: 0.44 g/100mL SRP: $12.00

Tart when first tasting, but quickly mellows to something more pleasant, but still too strong for my taste.

Rating: 86/100 - As reviewed by Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine (www.cgcw.com) in the August 2010 issue. Fans of strident Sauvignon Blanc herbaceousness may not be all that taken with this fresh and fruity offering, but those aiming to find an affordable and eminently affable quaff need look no further. The wine has just enough acid to temper its leanings to candy, and whether gulped down on its own or teamed with simple picnicky fare, it is as easy to drink as easy gets.Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine aging recommendation: Drinkable now. Unlikely to improve with further aging.
