What to Expect

Syrah: One of the few grapes to really be a global success. Syrah combines a meaty core of ripe berry fruit with tones that range from herbal to peppery in a package that tends to be medium bodied with good acidity and softer tannins. With age the wines can gain lovely leathery and black olive notes that make them a great match for savory and gamy dishes.

Winemakers Notes

The 2004 Miller wine Works Syrah, Brookside vineyard, Napa Valley virtually leaps out of the glass at you, with a bouquet of dried herbs and brier in tow. It possesses good weight without being burdensome, and again delivers a dark core of ripe boysenberry and juicy wild blackberries on the palate. Nuances of pepper and mineral marry seamlessly with a very fine tannin structure that frames the reasonably long finish nicely. It should continue to develop for another 3 – 5 years easily.

Reviews

This wine was very nice, smooth, enough fruit but not over "doing" it.

Hands down, one of the best wines I've ever tasted. There are lush tannins making the wine drinkable now but speak to the potential for this wine to develop over the next few years. Spicy blackberry notes dominate a truly complex flavor profile and over all, this wine wows me from start to finish!

Except in the American way. Very rich and fruity nose which immediately says, "You better not be planning on eating food, I'm a wine that loves to be the center of attention." And it's true, the taste packs a truckload full of flavors - all the classic fruit characteristics of a Syrah with a vegetal cabbage component which comes through upon tasting. All goes well for my taste except in the end, when the finish teeters off slightly...

There should be no question about it. This is what Syrah should be . . . every time. The nose starts off like just picked blueberries, and blackberries, followed up by freshly ground black pepper. It does not disappoint on the palate either. True to its nose, it sticks the blueberry notes perfectly with a lush mouth feel, and finishes with a hint of that pepper. What more could you ask for??
