What to Expect

Chardonnay is America's most popular grape and with good reason. Made in styles that range from steely, mineral laced wines with crisp green apple fruit to wines that are buttery, rich, and laden with tropical fruits, there is a Chardonnay that will appeal to every palate. Chardonnay is most closely associated with France's Burgundy region and California's Northern valleys though it has proven successful around the globe.

Winemakers Notes

Wine Recommendation: Mill Creek 2005 Chardonnay, Estate Winemaker Notes: The grapes for our 2005 Dry Creek Valley Chardonnay were harvested before dawn to allow the fruit to be brought to the winery cold. After crushing and pressing, the juice was fermented in a combination of stainless steel and small oak barrels over approximately four weeks. During this time, the lees were stirred every week. Malolactic fermentation was almost fully inhibited. This chardonnay was aged for five months in 60-gallon French oak barrels followed by bottling in the spring of 2006. Reviews

Rating: 92/100 - As reviewed by The Wine Messenger An easy-drinking California Chardonnay with fresh fruit flavors balanced with a touch of oak.
Dry Creek Valley Chardonnays tend to be more subtle and food friendly than other examples of California Chardonnay. Mill Creek’s estate Chard is a good example, balancing fresh fruit and oak flavors without becoming overpowering. The grapes are harvested before dawn so that they are still cold when crushed and pressed. A portion of the juice is barrel fermented and malolactic fermentation is strictly controlled to maintain the fresh apple flavors and mineral notes typical of Chardonnay. read more...

Flavors of apple and honeydew melon predominate, mixed with subtle accents from the small oak barrels.

Chardonnays from Dry Creek Valley tend to stay within a more subtle, restrained range of styles than many of their more opulent and showy counterparts from outside of Sonoma, and across the state. They often remind me of Clarksburg or Dunnigan Hills Chardonnays (or perhaps it is the other way around). This is quite a feat for growers and winemakers given the tremendous natural potential for super-ripe fruit that brings us some of the best Zins in the country. Owned and fully operated by the large Kreck family, this winery is built on a 55 acre ranch, though the family also owns 8 acres in Alexander read more...
