What to Expect

Most famous as the predominant grape in the blended wines of Rioja, Tempranillo has emerged as a potential star in regions as disparate as Australia and California. Tempranillo generally produces medium-bodied wines with juicy acidity and bright raspberry fruit enlivened by notes of dusty earth, dry herbs and leather. Tempranillo is often blended with Grenache, Graciano, and Mazuelo (aka Carignan) in the production of red wine from the Rioja region of Spain.

Editorial Reviews

At first fresh and fruity on the nose with a touch of smoky black spice then growing floral tones take the lead and are lifted by a touch of volatility. Soft on the attack, with a rich, extracted matte feel that is dominated by biter tannins. The acidity is good here and the fruit does hold some interest with it’s unsweetened black raspberry reduction tones that gain a touch of floral and cocoa on the short finish but this is ultimately chunky and rustic. 83pts

Reviews

This is a juicy and pulpy Tempranillo from Ribera that sees no oak at all and is remarkably fresh on the palate. There are coffee notes on the nose and delightful ripe tannins on the finish. Perfect with a well prepared medium rare steak and french fries.

Strange mustiness on the nose - sort of a blend of over ripe bananas and pork scratchings. Highly perfumed, very soft and supple. Low in tannins and smooth, but ultimately the perfumey taste felt very disjointed.
