Miguel Merino Tempranillo Blend Rioja Reserva 2005

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

American oak, leather, barnyard and a little cured meat with a hint of pepper greet the nose. Vanilla, incipient tobacco notes, a little cinnamon and some balsamic accents frame this complex bouquet. Upon entry, a gentle huckleberry tone is wrapped in soft tannins and a sweet, gentle disposition until the tannins build on the palate. In fact, this is packed with tannins, yet it retains a supple, soft feel on the mid-palate, which is rich with dark berry fruit and some huckleberry accents. The tannins extend through the finish, which shows an interesting combination of supple fruit and firm structure. Some coffee cream on the finish leads to a bright finale of sweet/tart cranberry fruit. 92pts

All the grapes come from very old vines planted in bush formation between 1931 and 1963 in Briones. The vineyards are located in slopes facing South and South-west with low-yielding clay and calcareous soils, at an altitude of 550 metres. Almost all of them are Tempranillo, one of the grape varieties that best reflects the particular conditions of each parcel. We also work with a small vineyard planted with Graciano, a very hard-to-grow grape variety which is a great companion to Tempranillo for its tannins and vivacity. The picking is made by hand, using small boxes that will take the bunches to the vinification room without any damage to the fruit. Every single bunch of grapes is placed on the sorting table, where we inspect them all for quality and reject any which are not in a perfect state of ripeness or health. Read less

Full and deep on the nose with roast peach, wood spice, leather, game, white truffle and white chocolate tones then with air this gains notes of saw dust, old books, cocoa powder, sweet red licorice, cherry pie, vanilla, beefy, lovely complex and balanced nose. The entry is rich and soft with bright acid driven fruit flavors, layered and juicy with a balsamic edge and dried bark, tea and rosehip notes to the bright cranberry/cherry fruit. Classic interplay of red fruit and vanilla in the mouth, lovely mid weight wine with a really elegant feel and a haunting sweetness to the fruit, finishes with sour cherry, vanilla and café-au-lait tones in balance and with good, bright length. A wonderful wine that is drinking perfectly today. 92pts

Damn -- that's an interesting nose. Slightly fungal, truffles and black pepper but there's a bit of fruit showing through. The palate is nice but not quite as fun as the aromas coming off of the wine, still... it's a good wine, full of baked earth, blackberry, a bit of tar and some well worn leather. Good food wine.

This nose brings in da funk. Mushroom and pale yellow smelling. Lots of mellow aged fruit and balsamic qualities. Less a wine and more a wine experience.

Iodine and mushroom nose. The chemical notes continue and its medium bodied in the mouth. Tart finish.
