Mietz Cellars Dry Creek Valley Syrah 2006

Winemaker's Notes:

2006 was a great year for red wine. Our 06 syrah grapes are from the Dry Creek Valley, both farmed by Ray Teldeschi. They were picked at elevated sugar levels and maximum ripeness. This accounts for the fruitiness of the wine. There are 8% petite sirah grapes from the Russian River Valley blended into the syrah. We used open top fermentation for this syrah. The wine was punched down by hand. The wine was aged in 100% French oak, 30% new barrels for 1 year. The wine is very dark ruby, rich, and has a dark black raspberry fruit flavor juxtaposed to a very rich, toasty vanilla flavor from the oak. This syrah is balanced by sufficient acidity, is very rich, and drinking well now. It has what it takes to age 5-10 years. 450 cases produced. http://www.mietzcellars.com/Syrah06.htm

Mietz Cellars is a small winery located at 602 Limerick Lane just south of Healdsburg, California. It's owned and run by Keith and Nancy Mietz, and their son Andrew (pictured at right) has recently joined the business. Our approach to wine making lies in the axiom, “Wines are made in the vineyard.” We put this axiom to practice when we purchased an old, neglected vineyard in 1978. In work-ing with the old vines we were able to absorb the nature of the terroir. When we replanted in 1981 we felt that merlot was well suited for the land. We implemented modern methods of viticulture such as canopy management and sustainable farming. In pursuit of growing fine wine in our vineyard we use the formula: vine health plus optimum yields, equals balanced, mature fruit. Our aim is to produce a world class merlot. Read less
