Michele Satta Sangiovese Toscana IGT Cavaliere 1998

Editorial Review by Gregory Dal Piaz:

Very typical nose with leather and earth and very fresh green herbs, and nuanced bitter almod. The entry is soft and round, very 1998 yet with a good juicy core of red fruits and bitter almond skin turning astringent on the long subtly spicy finish with echoes of bitter cherry. real shines with dinner but a nice glass on it's own.

In 1974, quite by chance, I had the opportunity to move from Varese to Castagneto Carducci, and from the Agricultural School of the University of Milan, to that of Pisa.I began working as a student on a fruit and vegetable farm, which belonged to somebody who wanted to modernise his farm. I encountered a method of agriculture that was just emerging from the share-cropping system, and attempting to keep pace with the rapid mechanisation and development of modern agricultural techniques. In practice I spent all day with the farm workers, from whom I learn much. They gave me a passion for the daily relationship with an environment that is above all based on friendship. I am marked by a love of the land and for this work, and am enthused with the energy needed to meet the demands of Nature and reap her rewards. The other decisive factor is the love of a wonderful woman, Lucia, who has followed me right from the beginning, and with whom I have a large family, Caterina, Anna, Benedetta, Veronica, Maria and Giacomo. So with their encouragement I have worked to create my own wine estate. Lucia has been involved in the enterprise for many years and today is as enthusiastic about making wine as I am. Read less

Lovely ruby color - medium bodied. After 3 hours open noted cherry, jolly rancher, a little oak and clean earth on the nose. The taste was primarily cherry with smoky oak. It seems there are still a lot of unresolved tannins in this wine along with some pretty strong acidity. Based on this tasting, and the quick tasting last week I believe I will sit on my remaining bottles for at least another year or two before retasting.

WLTV North Jersey Off-Line at Basilicos: This wine worked much better as a food complement than a stand-alone wine. Alone the wine was a bit sour and tough. During the meal (pasta) the flavors worked well together, and after the meal the taste further developed to be reminiscent of cherry kool-aid. Rather thin-bodied. No score at this time, need to re-taste.
