Michel Torino 'Don David' Malbec Reserve Argentina Cafayate Valley-Biodynamic 2009
This wine comes from the Bodega El Esteco winery in the Salta province of Argentina. The winery was created in 1892 under the name Michel Torino Bros La Rosa Wineries. In 1994, it was sold to Félix Lávaque, a winemaker who in turn sold it to a Swiss group that gave the company the image it has today: a premium winemaker. This Malbec has concentrated aromas of red fruit, spices and toasted notes from the oak. The wine is rich and complex and has a very long and attractive aftertaste due to its round and full ripe tannins. This wine would be ideal with spicy meat dishes.
Editorial Reviews for Michel Torino 'Don David' Malbec Reserve Argentina Cafayate Valley-Biodynamic
Nutty oak on the nose with an early hint of tomato leaf that's followed by a bit of cocoa, dried blackberry and black currant fruit, and a touch of sun dried tomato. A bit soft in the mouth, this shows a lovely suppleness and delivers nice balanced flavors of black cherry, toasty oak, and creamy blueberry fruit, which is actually very attractive. The low acid makes this a bit ponderous. The finish is brisk and bright, with more of that attractive fresh fruit and a bit of a brighter character. Needs more lift. 86pts

Cafayate Valley, ArgentinaDon David Malbec Reserve is our latest wine gem from Argentina, from Michel Torino. With over 1500 acres of vineyards standing at 5500-6600 feet above sea level, Michel Torino is the most important winery in the Cafayate Valley of Argentina. The 2008 vintage received a rating of 90 points from Jay Miller of Wine Advocate. No ratings yet on this new 2009, but we love it!Brothers Salvador and David Michel founded the winery in 1892, 22 years after discovering the Cafayate as an area suitable for fine wine production. The Cafayate Valley averages 330-340 sunny days per year, and has low humidity and a great thermal range, with evenly warm days (82 degrees) and cool nights (54 degrees). Irrigation is mandatory, as only 3-6 inches of rain fall per year. All of the Michel Torino wines are hand-harvested in the estate's own vineyards. Additionally, Andrs Hy, Torino's production manager, practices sustainable, environmentally- friendly farming by minimizing the use of fertilizers and chemicals in the vineyard. The unique Cafayete climate manifests itself in the elegant, focused profile of Michel Torino's wines. These are wines with an indelible sense of place, wines which complement food rather than overpower, wines which are true to their origin.Grapes are carefully chosen from Michel Torino's own estate, in the 'La Coleccion' vineyard. The vineyard rests in the province of Salta in Cafayate Valley, at an altitude of 5600 ft. above sea level. The grapes are stemmed and crushed with a roller system. Fermentation is done with selected yeasts at controlled temperatures of 82-86F. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation. The wine is then aged for 12 months in oak barrels of first to fifth use (60% American, 40% French).Don David Malbec Reserve is a rich red with full body and flavors of blackberry, plum, black raspberry, cedar and spice. Enjoy it over the next 10-12 years with roast beef, grilled meats, venison, roasts, and BBQ ribs.
The bodega is situated in the foothills of the Andes in the Cafayate region around Salta in Northwest Argentina in one of the most scenic regions of this country. The vineyards are planted at 1,700 metres making them the highest commercial sites in the world. Cool climate plays a key part with great variations between night and day time temperatures, slowing down the ripening cycle and ensuring the development of good varietal character. The hallmark of Salta red wines is the great intensity of colour while the white wines, Torrontes in particular, are fresh and appealing. Michel Torino is well recognised on the international market and is renowned for its excellent wine quality, elegant label design and premium presentation.
