virtually perfect balance and after the low quantities we realized in 2000, 2001 and 2003, it's good to actually make a little wine! Still, it was not much compared to say '99 but we brought in between 35 and 40 hl/ha with sugars that were so good that we didn't chaptalize anything, not even the Bourgogne. The malos were very long, which has helped to keep what were already very fresh wines even fresher and we didn't rack until October. As to the wines, 2002 is a vintage that I like a lot. In my view, it's clearly better than 1999 because it's wonderfully transparent to the underlying terroir. While there are several possibilities in terms of vintage comparisons, I believe the best reference is 1966. As Lafarge noted, this is a great set of wines and virtually everything is highly recommended, from top to bottom; even the Passe Touts Grains is well above standard. The mise is scheduled for April and I tasted them in very late February. I also discussed with Lafarge how he thought his '01s were coming along and he reiterated that he's now positive that they're as good as they are, in a relative context, because he waited so long to harvest, noting without the additional 10 days of ripening, I'm convinced that the wines would have been green and hard. They remind me a lot of our '91s at the same stage. On another front, 2002 represents the third year where the domaine has gone entirely biodynamic and Lafarge believes that the vines are beginning to respond with even better, and more transparent, fruit than they were getting before. Note: the Domaine's smallest holding at only .14 ha with vines that are now 50+ years of age Very high-toned red fruit that has a distinct mineral component to it is followed by textured, supple and dusty flavors of very impressive depth and length. There is the solid structure of Pommard present but it's fine and sophisticated, not rustic and hard. A great effort and as good a young Lafarge Péz as I can remember.    (hide)
